THESE ARE REAL PEOPLE JAMES.
More than 40 years after a massacre that appalled the world, the former US army officer convicted of organising mass killings in My Lai during the Vietnam war has made a public apology.
"I feel remorse for the Vietnamese who were killed, for their families, for the American soldiers involved and their families. I am very sorry." Lt. Calley - murderer, liar - and NEVER spent a day in jail.
The targets of the killings were mainly old men, women and children - all unarmed - as most younger members of the community were working in the fields.
The exact toll of the massacre still remain in dispute. But US estimates suggest that between 347 and 504 unarmed citizens were massacred that day.
Although a commission of inquiry recommended charges should be brought against 28 officers and two non-commissioned officers, Calley was the only US soldier convicted over the killings at My Lai. He was sentenced to life in prison, later reduced to house arrest.
This case is very much like the Iraq POW torture and killing in that all the high level officers got off, including Colin Powell (second in command of the Americal Division)....only ONE low level guy is left holding the bag. Calley.
After Lieutenant Calley's conviction and sentencing to life imprisonment, the White House ordered him removed from confinement in the stockade and confined to his bachelor's quarters at Fort Benning, Ga., pending an ultimate decision. Last Aug. 20, Lieut. Gen. Albert O. Connor, the commanding general of the Third Army ordered Lieutenant Calley's life sentence reduced to 20 years. That decision meant that Lieutenant Calley would be eligible for parole in six to seven years.
On September 10, 1975 was Calley paroled, after serving only three and a half years in what amounted to house-arrest.
Calley recently retired from his job as the manager at his father-in-law’s jewelery store.
He avoids interviews about My Lai--unless he is paid to give them.

I just wanted to weigh in before you get pulled. I know you are scarred and can never get what you saw out of your mind. That was the real horror of that war. I don't think the soldiers were treated well either. I was only just out of HS, so a little younger, and none of my friends had to go. But I always oppose a draft. I wish people would just shut up when they don't know what they are talking about. HP is desperate, and the few good writers left don't make money anyway. I think it was only a few who wrote mulitiple prodct hubs on several different forums, beating the game. I write well, and have the same $17 from Google Adsense I had when I complained about it in May. Bless you for being a great citizen, a patriot, and for telling a truth many people don't understand. Author Micheal Crichton wrote a book called "Fear" (I think that was the name) which drove home a point that the government controls its citizens through fear. Doesn't matter what kind of fear. Hello Mickey. You should publish your banned Hubs as e-books on Amazon for Kindle. They will be out there to be found. They might even make you a dollar or two. There are also other places to publish 'blogs' online. Anything banned here should be promoted everywhere you can think of. Just my opinion of course.

I am younger than you and did not have to serve in Vietnam. But I remember the nightly newscasts. I remember all the people who were protesting the ethics of the war. I never saw a soldier get spat upon. I remember watching the dropping of napalm while sitting safe in my living room. I remember seeing the helicopters coming in and getting fired at. We at home only had a very limited view of the war. What you and your fellow Vietnam vets went through is unimaginable.
The protests I remember had to do with injustice and the death or our soldiers. Everyone wanted to know why we were there. They wanted us to bring our boys home. They were peaceful demonstrations that were marred by the
violence of police by local governments who did not want the protests in their backyards. They were embarrassed by them.
I remember at the end of the war, the scenes of aircraft coming in with soldiers living and dead. I remember that there were no protests against soldiers there either.
You are quite right Vietnam war history is full of gross inaccuracies. As you can plainly see there are many who remember the truth. It was the service and sacrifice of the Vietnam vets that made me want to join the army. I joined in 1982. I had no bad felings toward Vietnam vets and we (vets my age) only had the greatsest admiration and deepest respect for all of you who fought. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. KMattox
Dear Micky, I went to a reunion ( Iwo Jima ) I went with my friend Tom, who is a world war two Iwo surviver, he's 86 years, there are so few left that we had to have the reunion with the Nam vets, i listened to all of their stories and they all say the same as you, not one of them believed that we should have been there. When we look at how easy it is for people with little conscience to take from the poor and sick in the country, we can only imagine how little regard they have for those beyond it. The whole system is infested with lies. It is like the pollution they throw into our rivers and streams in the name of progress and jobs. It is all greed. And war is greed. It is hardly ever about defending any one in particular. It is about protecting business interests. The U.S. Navy was created to protect business interest along the Barbary coast. American involvement in both World War I and World War II did not happen in order to curb some great evil. We had to be coaxed into them. The current war on terrorism is about protecting oil interests in the middle east and Israel. Vietnam didn't prevent anything and costs millions of people their lives. War is a crime. Though just as a matter of personal preference, I have never been good at "ranting" Micky. Not that I am criticizing you whatsoever. I know the frustration that boils up when you come across something so subtly written that the majority of people will accept what they read as fact, especially if it seems to fit their world view and written in an authoritarian tone.
I read several of his hubs - about cars and other innocuous subjects and came away feeling that they are wordy and the sentences flowed nicely but they all seemed written for a specific "audience". He offers shibboleths to his captured readers who he knows will praise his "work." Strictly commercial and linear...
Now and then I learned something that was new to me but it was like reading stuff in high school that I was going to have to do an essay on...
Then I read his hub "Missionaries". And though I don't think I had ever left a comment before, this one was about a subject I happen to be very familiar with and have discussed with my relatives who were missionaries. Southern Baptist type, way fundamental and I had discussions with them as a teen, a young adult and last time in my 30's. So, when I recognized the dogmatic and propagandistic, one sided essay of his, I asked a simple innocuous question.
He then began a rant, aligning me with information that he posed which had absolutely nothing to do with anything I said or my question. He used 8 (I think) paragraphs in an ad hominum argument attacking me. He then lifted out words and parts of my bio, added his own words, and took them all out of context which would meet the legal definition of slander. Using the tactic of discrediting me and making me out a fool and "hypercritical" to make my comment and question useless and unworthy to those who would read it.
This was a major, and still is by many, method the Bush/Cheney/Republican/Conservative folks used to methodically destroy our civil liberties and rape America for their personal gain.
He then went on to question the character and life of my Southern Baptist Missionary Grandparents implying that I felt poorly of them.
Then.... a few comments when another hubber commented on how interesting the question that I posed was he, rather than making the comment that came to his mind, would rather like to see how James would answer my question.
To which James Watkins enthusiastically praised him and stated that it was such a good subject/question that it was worthy of a book which he was now going to consider writing!
I have to agree with you and scottmonster 100% He is one sly smooth propagandist and yes since he did fabricate and falsify what I have written in my bio in his rant and use it to quote me (Yes, he quoted me...) and Lied in order to slander my character for his propaganda.

I appreciate your knowledge and experience in this matter. Your points are interesting and certainly worth researching. I will say though that there is absolutely no reason to attack another hubber the way you have. I very much think you should be able to give your side of the story. It think it's great. Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of this country. If you disagree with James then make your points and be heard. But, verbal attacks on another hubber's character and slandering him as a person should not be tolerated and I personally would pull your hub if I was functioning as a moderator. It's not a matter of freedom of speech. It's a matter of what's best for this website. Your style of free speech would turn HubPages into the Jerry Springer Show and HubPages is not obligated to support or allow it on their site, especially if they have guidelines for content which you are required to follow in order to post content here. If you don't like their guidelines, focus on your blog where you can post whatever you want.
I hope you can treat your fellow hubbers with the respect they deserve. Making an argument is great. Come forward with your evidence. Disagreement is a healthy thing. I commend hubpages for upholding respect for freedom of speech. Each of us are given respect when viewpoints from different vantage points are presented. Each of us has the right to come to our own conclusions.
I wasn't there to see what Micky saw in the flesh. I do know that the photograph of the young woman, alone, dead in a field, makes the atrocities real for me. I will never forget it. When I see her face, her posture, I don't need to know her personally to know that this woman was someone's child, maybe a sister, a mother, a wife, and I feel grief for her and those that loved her. Even animals grieve such loss among their own.
I worry about those that can remain dispassionate, even in the face of a horrifying photograph, with Micky's words in a reminder that "These are real people". This deserves passion. I think about the fact that were that my mom, sister, friend or another human being I'd seen a moment before, I would want Micky's compassion walking next to me. Although he has seen things I hope I never see happen in front of me, because I would be crazy, he remains pure in his compassion, passion and dedication to his truth. He has no agenda other than the truth. He speaks his peace and each of us are free to accept or reject it. But, only in each person's right to express it, are we free.

Your content is separate from your tone and your attacks of another person's character. I might have actually enjoyed your hub and gotten something worthwhile out of it if it wasn't written with such vehemence. Same for your comments. I'm not sure why it is that we can't allow other people to have opinions that differ from ours. There's nothing wrong with James writing what he believes to be true. You do the same. There are so many things running through my mind that I feel like I might faint. I actually went and read JW's Vietnam hub, reluctantly,and honest to God, I swear on the bible, I kept an open mind and I wanted to think you were just nit picking and crazy.
It was clear to me, as it has been so many times after reading JW's hubs, that what he wrote was mostly word for word, copying from different books from authors who share his extremist opinions. It is good to read books to get information but we should use our own words to make us a credible writer. Also if you are giving a written account of a historical event, you MUST remain neutral if you are a professional. It is fine to state your opinions, but you have to say that they are your opinions. You cannot present it as fact. He cannot actually know what what going on in Johnson's mind, nor does he know what Johnson's strategy was for the war. He also doesn't know what was going on behind the scenes that caused Johnson to make certain decisions that he made. To say Johnson didn't want to win the war is shameful to me as a citizen. Johnson may have made mistakes with the war but to assume you know what his intent was is unfathomable. It would be fair for James to say that in his research, he himself concluded that Johnson's intent was such and such. We all have our opinions on war and how we think it should have been fought, or not fought, but we cannot state certain opinions as fact when writing history in a book or internet simply because school children google these topics and use this information for reports and for future decisions.
It was unfair of James to call protestors of the war communist and atheist. Our founding fathers of this country advised us to question our government. We the people have a right to know what is going on in a war that we sacrifice our very young sons, just out of high school, to kill and die for. I think it was smart and humane for Johnson to not want to kill civilians while James's author's sources said we should have just wiped them off the map. That is the most horrible statement a human could make and I got knots in my stomach reading this from a so called devout Christian. I don't understand how James could be against abortion but doesn't mind wiping out whole populations of men, women, children, and women carrying unborn fetuses. Honestly, this hurts my heart more than it makes me angry. I really feel like crying right now because I wonder what we have become as human beings. I know that I can rant and rave, and I quit reading most of James's hubs a long time ago due to so much condemnation of those who do not believe as he does or is of the same race. Even though I strongly disagreed with him on his views, I still liked him as a person because I AM tolerant of all people and they have a right to their convictions. In all honesty, I thought James really believed what he wrote and who can fault someone for that? Now, I'm starting to think he is being dishonest and is trying to promote an agenda for a personal gain. It hurts me that I lost him as a hubpages friend, not because of numbers of followers or scores, I could care less, I don't even have an account here for money so I am not here for that. It hurts me concerning James, because he was one of the first people when I came here to support me in my writing. He was polite, supportive, and very much likable. Why can't he just be open minded and respect all people, listen to all viewpoints and try to understand the wisdom of others that do not follow his doctrine. Life is not black and white, democrat or republican, christian, or Muslim, Communist, or Capitalist. Life is full of mostly grey areas. Matter of fact opinions of one train of thought is practiced only for promoting an agenda. One train of thought also promotes hypocrisy. This is a dangerous way of thinking and it is a communist way of thinking. Church and state MUST be separate, otherwise, we end up with people like James who has no problem with killing or accusing, or hating, which causes him to go against the very religion that he supports so much. I thought you had many good points in your comment to Micky. At that particular time,70s, I was Secretary for a charity called 'Medical and scientific aid for Vietnam'. I was often attacked and had oldish -Rich-Women shout at me to get back to Russia ! Spat at and much worse ! All we did was to organise film shows and fashion shows,Auctions and many more things just to get money for medical aid for the injured and dying in terrible situations in the jungles of Vietnam-a lot of the aid consisted of Blood. Personally I am a a rare Blood Group so felt delighted that that was being sent.
You mention that you were crying when thinking about the babies and vulnerable in the invasion. I can empathise easily ! Hundreds of us worked together then eventually we managed to scratch together enough money to purchase a mobile unit (small hospital)which the Soviets delivered free to Vietnam for us, as they did with everything we sent. Every bit of money was used honestly for aid. Lots of different beings worked closely on this committee. Communists,Socialists,Catholic Communists, German Jewish and many more good people

Jandee, I'm sure I didn't make sense when I wrote my comment. I have a hard time making a clear point when I am upset. My head was pounding and I couldn't seem to keep a thought intact. What I was trying to say, and I might be wrong in thinking it, is that James Watkins wants to accuse so many Americans of being Communist, but I see his portrayal of "One way of thinking" not permitting anyone dignity for a different viewpoint, being of another race, having another religion, being a democrat, etc. etc. as being more of a communist than those he accuses. Listening and trying to understand others viewpoints and respecting their race, culture and different religions IS freedom and it promotes freedom.
I just want to make my position clear. I support Micky Dee 100%. He is not crazy, more like frustrated and at the end of his rope with distortions of truth and a corrupt government that doesn't have the interests of the citizens in their decision making.

I enjoyed the exchange between jandee and lisadpreston and Mickee... it all does make you wonder the "who" it is behind HubPages and making these decisions. I was following springboard who is having similar issues on his hub and is trying to start a conversation with other hubbers to see if a real human bean will show his face. So far a bureaucrat has shown up and sounded like a real tool of management but I guess we'll see.

I once penned a hub , a true one , about a war hero of mine and mine alone , my brother , who served proudly in the Marines in Viet Nam , now here's the thing ! He believed then and he believes now that the mission simply was unfinished ! He said to me many times that he would have returned to finish it if he could have ! Over the years I have tried to read and listen to the man within him too. The one that lies within , without speaking of the horrors and the trials of his war service. I have grown up with a profound sense of respect for veterans , and I have learned here too ! About the veterans who are , or were against the wars [s]. I have learned humbly that in respect of both the believer in war and the anti war vets ! That all views are genuine views. My hub about my brother was judged Substandard too !
