An Ode To Three Possums In The Middle Of The Road
80
Possums were around when dinosaurs roamed our planet.
The opossum lifespan is unusually short for a mammal of its size, usually only two to four years.
They have prints on their paws like finger prints. So if a possum gets into your stuff you can identify that culprit.
Opossums are an asset to anywhere they roam. They eat all types of bugs including cockroaches, crickets and beetles. They eat mice and
rats. They are attracted to neighborhoods by available water, food or pet food left out at night. Opossums keep our neighborhoods clean and free of unwanted, harmful
garden pests and rodents, which may carry diseases. The opossum is "Nature's Little Sanitation Engineer."

An Ode To Three Possums In The Middle Of The Road
It’s a “cycling day" and I simply must ride.
It’s too pretty a day to remain inside.
The world is refreshed and is all brand new.
What a beautifully glorious day to pursue!
So many plants boldly display their blossoms.
But the roads are alive with a lot of dead possums.
If this possum plays possum for very long,
The smell will become impossibly strong.
O-possum what has rigor mortis taught us?
Did you lose the race with the hare and the tortoise?
There’s no one here to make note of his passing.
Of course the circling vultures are amassing.
Was the cause of the death ruled a suicide?
Or was the possum in the road to “hitch a ride”?
No one is there to draw a chalk line.
There is no respect to erect a little shrine.
There won’t be a formal autopsy performed.
The buzzard’s dinner is merely being warmed.
This possum has gone as many before.
But why was he there? Was he trying to score?
And just down the road is another road-kill.
Was she in the road against her will?
O-possum why are you lying there dead?
Apparently a car has run over her head!
Now another possum carcass is in the same lane.
Was there fowl play or were they all insane.
Was it an accident or a sordid plot?
This is what I wonder as their bodies rot.
Could it all be blamed on a lovers’ triangle?
Were they killed as they tried to disentangle?
Was it homicide as they were embracing?
Or were they just in the road for a bit of racing?
Except for that tell-tale tail, each could be a cat.
That tail protrudes while all else is flat.
One marsupial seems to have a sinister grin.
A speeding car gives the corpse a spin!
Weren’t they warned about possible danger?
Were two led astray by acts of a stranger?
There’s a void about their recent brief history.
Alas, we’ll never solve this nagging mystery.
Perhaps a pair was seeking love nocturnally.
And now their spirits are joined eternally.
No solutions are offered as their bodies corrode.
One rodent bloats- and may soon explode.
Let’s at least place some flowers or Mardi Gras beads?
Let’s dress up the road as the possum bleeds.
It’s with a heavy heart that I pin this “ode”.
For the three dead possums in the middle of the road!
PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa.
Police say
they charged a Pennsylvania
man with public drunkenness after he was seen trying to resuscitate a long-dead
opossum along a highway.
State police Trooper Jamie Levier says several witnesses saw 55-year-old Donald
Wolfe, of Brookville, near the animal Thursday along Route 36 in Oliver
Township, about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
The trooper says one person saw Wolfe kneeling before the animal and gesturing
as though he were conducting a séance.
He says another saw Wolfe attempting to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Of course, we don't want it happen to us. But it looks weird when it become menu for dinner. Thanks Micky for showing me about this .Good work, my friend!

POEM FOR MICKY DEE, THE MAN ON HIS BYCYCLE
He said his name is Micky Dee, but I heard they called him Michael
Look so fit, cycling everywhere
Always share his view from above his ride
Hei Mister, I salute you for your sportive passion of write
Bald and beardy; he said he is 100 years old now
But he still sound like young soul to me
Always nice, I appreciate his way of talk
I love his poem and enjoy his works so much
Micky Dee, you are inspiration to me
Maybe not the only one but surely it's fine
I admire your spirit and your thoughtful words
Thank you for always have something good to make me laugh
I have so much fun reading your works, Micky! ^_^
I'd rather pass 12 Opossums in the roud than 1 skunk!
D.
Micky this was funny as -loved it!
I always like the furry critters, ugly as they may be. I also have wondered how George earned his nickname. Ever see one eating the corn from fresh cow pies? 'Grinnin' like a possum eatin' shit.' I have seen that. That may be why I and habee have never eaten one. Great hub Mick. CC
Ouch! (blush blush blush everywhere) Psst!!! Don't let Mr. Story Teller hear you saying that! LOL.
Cheer up, Micky Dee. We all love you! ^_^
HMMM..LOL it's that time of year again...Possums dead everywhere. Must be kind of gross when you are riding your bike and have to see them...not to mention the smell...are there armadillos in North Carolina? They are worse than possums to me.
I was an over the road hauler for a few years and unfortunately for those possums and armadillos our 18 wheels took a lot of them to their early graves. Heck I've seen just about every furry animal there is come out of the bush to get away from the flies and when they do many of them get killed. The poor dear and moose who venture out to lick the salt put down in the winter, also get their last licks in. To many are killed, but sure helps keep the population down. And yes just like that video, some of us drivers end up in the ditch trying to avoid those critters.
Ah Micky Dee, I can always count on your writings to deliver a quirky, informational, light-hearted twist! Just the thing I need to get me out of a funk and back to thinking again or possum-ly trying to think again! Love that not my job award pic, lmao over that one, hehehe. Hey Micky, how YOU doi'in?
callmefoxxy, my pen is a mighty sword!
I truly enjoyed the great poetry. I came away with a new respect for possums. I will no longer chase them out of my house. I will welcome the poor critters in. And hope that keeps them out of the road.
Oh good grief Micky Dee those poor possums. Good thing you did that ode to them. Nice!! I wouldn't want them anywhere near my yard even if they are sanitation engineers lol.
We have opossums all over the neighborhood. I have no problem with them, think they're funny. They behave just like housecats, sit and preen themselves after they eat. One summer night I had the back door open and the lights out and when I went into the kitchen to get a drink I turned on the light and there was an opposum on the counter eating the cats' food. We were staring each other down. I told him to leave and turned the light back off then waited for him so I could close the door. He didn't leave until the food was gone. Weird little animals.
Loved it! I'll link it to mine!
lol....vegan here. Enough said! The first picture is so adorable!
as usual learned something new from your hub. Loved all the writing both kinds :).. stopping by every few days keeps me reading for hours catching up on everyone's Hubs.. your us usually one of the first i start with, so you know i got a few to go ..... keep writing so I can keep reading so I gets some good inspiration to keep myself writing. :) and the circle keeps building. ~Aloha~
what a great hub, possums, gotta love what they do. Then of course was the Vader singin the blues...brilliant.
Thank you and thanks for the comments on my hubs.
Bro,this is simply amazing,it is one in a million, educative and i bookmarked it cos i gat to read it over and over, rated it up and shared it with my folks in my little world. One final thing, was happy and so so so happy when i got here and saw 112,i got same score today 112...Circling in the right circle. Thanks bro,i appreciate all i have learned from you.
We have had possums in our backyard as well as racoons and even armadillos not to mention the ever present squirrels. Lots of critters here in the South! Nice ode, Mickey!
Oh, it can cause accident as well. I like your ode, but I am more amuse with the possum,
This is a great hub again, I like the videos, I like the ode and interesting things about the possum -- opposum hehe, Thank you Mick, and I smiled as well, hehe, Maita
Hi Micky, Possums have never found there way to visit the UK so it is all news to me. I thought how cute they must be looking at the first photo, but when I saw the adult ones I changed my mind. We get lots of hedgehogs as road kill here. I think the hedgehogs end up totally flattened because they curl up in a ball when frightend. I guess evolution did not equip them too well to deal with roads. Best leave now - as I am rambling on. I enjoyed reading this and laughed out loud at times. Thanks.
Micky, I'm doing great. Thanks for stopping by my place. It's always good to hear from you. I'm smiling too.
I'm gonna be the holiday delicacy in my mama peaches (my grandmother) kitchen was possum. I did not know they were natures garbage man. Ye gads!!! I stopped eating the things when I saw it on her kitchen table sans skin, it look like a blasted rat. . O my God . . I need a beer.
Hahaha I have read the Hubs hehe GREAT WORK -very informative love the description...I must admit the most I loved was the rhyming comments :) hehe it made me laugh THANK YOU :))) I admire both yours and Kimberleys words excellent :)
I love the truck songs- so creative!
Possums do seenm to be the most hit on the roads, perhaps they are a wee bit slower then coons and rabbits, or perhaps they are tired of just playing possum and want to try the real thing.....no more hanging around just a quick exit to possum heaven..whatever that might be. A two acre garbage can of food scraps and bugs galore.LOL~~MFB III
This is one of the coolest web sites we've seen in the possum world. Great pictures and so many stories. Can't wait to share it with everyone in the possum world, which is bigger then most imagine out there. We are always looking for new possum themes at www.northcarolinapossumdaychapter.com where everyone in the possum world can find out all of the details about our 2nd annual possum day festival right here in the piedmont of the great state of North Carolina. And right now as you are reading this Gunther is brewing up a new batch of Possum Licker for this years festival, and it will be bearing our new Possum Family Shield on the label for all to enjoy. Until then, Have a happy Possum Day !!!!!!!!
red neck swimming pool? lmao that is rich! Good one Micky ~Hugs~
remember that song by Loudon Wainwright III called - DEAD SKUNK - well Mister Dee of Mickey you are still the funniest man on hubpages - and quite possibly beyond that as well - a gift I say to humanity - you humble all the rest of us with your camaraderie, diplomacy, state of grace and good nature!
Well I have seen two around my porch late at night and today middle of the day. I don't want them unless they eat ants so I have to do something. As a kid I liked their babies clinging to them, but I guess a baby anything is cute. Lilly my cat keeps all rats and mice away and she won't fight these possums so I have to think of something, I don't kill anything like that. Its ugly enough alive.
I'll kindly try mothballs all around first. I never have food outside...well except Lilly.
I think their mean little critters I was in the yard and one growled at me. I think it had babies under the house. awesome poem!
as alwyas teh pictures put a smile on ym face, and the words, well they are from a talented writer, I am stumbling this in hopes for some traffic blessings for you.
I think little possums are kinda cute
esp. if you dress em in a little suit
Now the'possum' geo. Jones is my main man
iv,e loved him forever, i,m his # one fan
His song, ' He stopped loving her today'
Used to be the story of my life
It cut me deep, just like a knife
but iv,e learned over the years
not to listen, too many tears
now back to possums, they run amuck
splattered all over the highway
by a big old mack truck
enjoyed your hub a lot
Cheers and God Speed
I love the little critters. When I lived out in the sticks, I left dog food out for them and "Poindexter" got very big!
My daughter, a rabid animal lover, stopped on a dark country road when she saw some suspicious movement near a opossum in the road. When she approached she saw the mama was dead, but still had four babies clinging to her trying to nurse. She pulled them off the mother opossum, choking back her puke and took them to the Wildlife Center, where they were cared for and released into the wild when healthy. I love your ode to a critter some find odious! And if the opossum's knew, they salute you, Micky Dee.
Don´t know how l´ve missed this one. The entire hub is brilliant, but l must admit that ´´playing a country song backwards´´ has me in hysterics. Love you, man.x
came back for another read, feeling sorry for the possums. No matter how hard I try, (and I DO feel for any creature killed on the road) try, try, your poem is just too funny . I can´t help myself . Laughing out loud. Hubbie especially loves Not my job of the year award.

Besides this hub being disjointed in its information about Possums, I did write about the possum a hub too. I have a few around my area and yes they do come for the cat food that I leave out for the cats. Now I take up the cat food before we go to bed.
