Operation Northwoods
On March 13, 1962, unknown to President John Kennedy, the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff okayed Operation Northwoods which was a plan to blow up a United States airplane. This would be committing terrorist murders against American citizens on American soil. Cuba would be blamed. It would be justification for a United States invasion. This was the master-mind of Lyman Lemnitzer. Kennedy demoted Lyman Lemnitzer in November of 1962. John Kennedy was killed November 22, 1963 in Dallas.
It may have been the idea of President Eisenhower in the last days of his administration. Cold War was hotter than ever. The U-2 scandal was fresh in the public's memory. The old general wanted to go out a winner. He wanted to invade Cuba in the weeks leading up to Kennedy's inauguration. On January 3 he told Lemnitzer and other aides in his Cabinet Room that he would move against Castro before the inauguration if the Cubans would just give him an excuse. With time growing short, Eisenhower floated this idea. If Castro failed to provide that excuse, the United States "could think of manufacturing something that would be generally acceptable." He was suggesting a pretext, a bombing, an attack, an act of sabotage carried out secretly against the United States and by the United States. Its purpose would be to justify war. This scenario has played out many times in history.
In 1975 Lyman Lemnitzer would be appointed to the Commission on CIA Activites (Rockefeller Commission) within the US. He was appointed by President Gerald Ford. This was to determine if the CIA had violated American laws. Say what? Read both of these again?

Senior Pentagon officials cancelled flights on Sept 10 for the following day.

Nine hijackers that were identified by the United States have been found alive or they are known to have died years ago.
Seven of the September 11 hijackers trained on US military bases.
Five hijackers lived in a motel just outside the gates of the National Security Agency at Fort Meade, Maryland.
Mohamed Atta enjoyed pork chops, drank to excess, and did cocaine while he attended the International Officer's School at Maxwell Air Force Base,.
Saeed Alghamdi, Ahmed Alnami, and Ahmed Alghamdi listed the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida, as their permanent address on their driver's licenses. Even Hamza Alghamdi was connected to the Pensacola base.
The Florida operation base of September 11 hijackers was in the congressional district of Porter Goss. Porter Goss sponsored the PATRIOT Act.
Inside a rental car, Mohammed Atta left a will, a Koran, a driver's license, and a "how to fly planes" video at the airport. Excuse me- Micky here –say isn’t this a little “too pat” here? It’s like the classic frame-up in a movie. Kill somebody, then put the loaded evidence under the seat of the patsy’s car!
On Sept 10, Atta and two Arab men spent hundreds on drinks and lap dances as they spewed anti-American sentiments at Florida strip club. A copy of the Quran and a business card were left behind.
Mohamed Atta allegedly flew Flight 11. He passed directly over Indian Point nuclear power plant en route. If he had hit the power plant, it would have rendered the United States northeast corridor uninhabitable for thousands of years.
Although photo IDs were required to board, not one hijacker's name is on any of the passenger manifests nor are they on the victim lists.
Although 43 lbs of heroin were found on board Wally Hilliard’s LearJet no charges were brought. Wally Hilliard was owner of Atta's flight school. This occurred just three weeks after Atta enrolled. It was the biggest seizure ever in Central Florida.
Hilliard's plane had made 30-round trips to Venezuela with the same passengers who always paid cash. Hilliard’s plane was supplied by a pair of drug smugglers. These are the same drug smugglers who outfitted a plane for CIA drug runner Barry Seal.
An amazing amount of confusion exists regarding the number of passengers claimed to have been on the planes, which in aggregate were only 27% full. Excuse me- Micky here –I’ve not flown much. I’ve never been on a plane that was not full. I don’t even know if what I’m saying is relevant without more info. I’ve always flown “full” though.
Investigators for the Congressional Joint Inquiry discovered that an FBI informant had hosted and rented a room to two hijackers in 2000. The Inquiry sought to interview the informant. The FBI refused. The FBI hid him. A high-level FBI official stated that the blocking maneuvers were under orders from the White House.
September 11 commissioner Richard Ben-Veniste had been Barry Seal's attorney before Seal's murder.

Wargames
NORAD conducted exercises in 1999 in which airplanes were hijacked and crashed into targets. These “targets” included the WorldTradeCenter and Pentagon. This means that the WorldTradeCenter and the Pentagon were anticipated.
Three F-16 jetfighters from Andrews Air Force Base, 15 miles from Pentagon, were flown 180 miles away for a training mission on the morning of September 11.
Andrews Air Force Base is home to DC Air National Guard and Air Force 1 & 2. Andrews Air Force Base had no jetfighters on alert.
On October 24, 2000 the Pentagon conducted emergency training exercises in which a mock passenger plane crashes into the Pentagon.
A missle shield over Washington, DC was deactivated several weeks before September 11 by Paul Wolfowitz, Sandy Berger, and Condoleeza Rice. This was due to upcoming “wargames”. The head of NORAD, Joint Chief of Staff Chairman Gen Meyers, moved most of the planes to West Coast.
On Feb 5, 2003 Donald Rumsfeld and General Myers confirmed that there were a total of four war games and simulations (Vigilant Guardian) on September 11. This evolved from the questioning by Rep. McKinney.

Ellen Mariani said that she was the only relative of all the passengers that died on Flight 175 that she or her lawyer, Phil Berg, could find.

Larry Silverstein was not in his office on the 88th floor because of a “doctors appointment”.
Witnesses, physical and photographic evidence suggests aircraft may not have been a Boeing 767.
Basement worker Bill Rodriguez heard an explosion below him, then he heard the plane impact above him. He then saw a burned man come out of a basement elevator.
In 2004, the “9/11 Commission" Report said the lobby was destroyed by "a jet fuel fireball ... shooting down at least one bank of elevators". But Arturo Griffith and a co-worker survived the freight elevator cable severing and free-fall after the plane impact. They were heading from the second-level basement to the 49th floor. The emergency brakes caught after freefalling 15 floors.
Squibs (miniature explosive devices) were emanating from well below the collapse zone.
According to the head of a national demolition association, “the collapse of the towers looked like a classic controlled demolition".

Donald Rumsfeld announced Pentagon had lost track of $2.3 trillion on Sept 10.
On Sept 8, Marine Aviation group moved further away from where explosion at the Pentagon would happen.
Barbara Olson's air phone calls from 35,000 feet are the only indication humans played a role in the hijacking of four aircraft. She is the one showcased death, and was writing a book about President Clinton pardoning terrorists.
American Airlines in 2006 that their 757s in 2001 had no onboard phones. Anyone calling out from Flight 77 had needed to use a cell phone. Barbara Olson could not have used a passenger-seat phone. This left open the possibility that Ted Olson was correct when he said that his wife had used her cell phone. However- the evidence from the Moussaoui trial ruled out this possibility. In its report on AA 77, it listed one attempted call from Barbara Olson, which was “unconnected” and hence lasted “0 seconds.”

“Hani Hanjour' the pilot of 'Flight 77”, was so incompetent he could barely land a Cessna in August, yet managed to fly superbly and at the limit of the 757 airframe. He and 757 spiraled a 270-degree descent and made a level impact on the first floor of the Pentagon.
“Hani Hanjour and Flight 77” made a U-turn in order to hit the side directly opposite to the office of Donald Rumsfeld and other Pentagon top brass. This left an 18ft diameter hole that penetrated 3 rings of the reinforced concrete building. No wings, engines, seats, luggage or passenger remains were found on the lawn outside.
The Pentagon was hit on a side largely unoccupied. This space held fiscal records and accountants. The accountants died trying to straighten out the Pentagon budget mess at the end of the fiscal year. (Micky here- any connection with – “Donald Rumsfeld announced Pentagon had lost track of $2.3 trillion on Sept 10”? The problem is- who can we trust for honesty?)
Jamie McIntire, who was live at the scene, said, "from my close-up inspection, there's no evidence of a plane ... crash ... anywhere near the Pentagon".
Construction worker Mike Flocco said on Larry King Live that the plane that hit the Pentagon had “fewer engines” than the other September 11 planes.

Banker's Trust-AB Brown was the firm that placed the "put options" on United Airlines stock. Until 1998, it was managed by the no. 3 man at the CIA, A.B. "Buzzy" Krongard. He resigned shortly after the Goss arrival in December 2004.

a mechanical failure.
This agency is about four miles from the runways of

The National Reconnaissance Office operates many of the nation's spy satellites

The shoot-down authorization was not communicated to NORAD until 28 minutes after Flight 93, allegedly piloted by Ziad Jarrah, crashed at 10:06. NORAD did not accept offers from Air National Guard units until about 10:01. (?)
At 9:26 AM on September 11 all United States fights were grounded except mercy flights for bin Laden family members and Saudi royals.
A recording made Sept 11 of 6 air traffic controllers describing what they had witnessed, was destroyed by an FAA official. This official crushed the recording by hand. He cut the tape into little pieces. He then dropped them in different trash cans around the building.
The New York City officials decided that the New York Fire Department's September 11 audio and text records should never be made public.
Central Intelligence Agency Director Tenet blamed Osama bin Laden for attacks even before the second plane crashed.
Five illegal immigrant Israeli “movers” with links to military-intelligence were arrested on September 11. They were videotaping and celebrating the attacks from LibertyPark. They were later quietly deported with 200 other Israeli spies.
The flight school records of Florida Huffman Aviation disappeared when Jeb Bush loaded them onto a C-130 military cargo plane. The plane was bound for Washington in early morning hours of September 12.

Company hired to help clean up Ground Zero was Controlled Demolition Inc., also the contractor for the Oklahoma City bombing cleanup.

Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle told moderator Tim Russert on NBC's Meet the Press in May of 2002 said that on January 24, 2002, Cheney urged him not to investigate 9/11. Four days later Bush did the same. After the question by Tim Russert, "It was 'No investigation by anyone, period'?" Daschle replied, "That's correct."

Mick, a lot of info to cover here and it will take a bit of time to do it justice of comment in watching these videos that must have taken a load of time to assemble. I need not watch more than I have at this point to say, from the death of JFK this country has fallen and it is just picking up speed. Cover ups, secret operations and lies, lies and more lies from all angles of every picture and every political stance and party. JFK was willing to expose the plan and they killed him, Reagan got a stiff warning. I have seen the videos of George Carlin and his bit about staying home and not voting thus winning the right to cuss those who voted for a piece of crap and put them in office, it's a funny bit but it is a fact as well, he points out that there are no better to choose from. I think that is a fact as well, with the exception of a working man, but a poor boy ain't got a chance, he's got no money and that excludes us from the dream. We don't belong to any rich mans club and sadly that is what gets one there, money, lying, and hidden memberships to the gatherings of Satan's best. I'm a poor boy, I suppose by choice but I'm relatively happy, I have the wants of different things, I don't have the need of anything, God, Yahweh has done well in hearing me and filling my needs, so comparatively speaking I'm better off than most. To your point, there is no that's NO! political party that has served in honesty, for the people who voted for them, they are all, every single one in it for self gain and this past election was most likely the last time I will ever vote, I cannot change the world, I can only influence my tiny spot and spread the little Golden Rule I command, and try to get it right and fair. I belong to just one club and that is Yahweh, the father, Jahshua, the son the Holy Ghost and me. It's kind of a private club with 4 members and it's kind of selfish as it comes first in my life. Everybody is welcome to create their own little club and then our clubs can get together and discuss the clubs and come to middle ground and get along. I place my faith there in my club, and if I am true to the faith that I will be cared for by the Father and Son above me through the channel of the Holy Ghost, I don't need to vote. We have great people/kids who are serving "us" the - but "us". I want these kids to do well. I want them to prosper. Those people who love God want the best for people everywhere.

I think the U.S. is too far gone with corruption--the younger generation will never get out of the trillions of dollar debt--so sad! We have everything--you are right-secrecy-lies-corruption-no justice. It is so far gone it sickens me. The 911 situation just puts the whip cream on it for me. I was horrifed when I saw all the documentation and those trying to stop the true investigation. It was a sad day for me when it all sunk in.
This hub was so truthful but sadly..it is going to get worse. All darkness will come to light now won't it? I stay out of the politics, voting--it doesn't matter--I know who is running the show and it isn't the people! Hug!
What is also ridiculously sad is the way the "citizens oppose each other. There is not much "brotherly love" when election time comes a round. It's hate. Each side has to dredge up as much hate as they can. Any election worth having is worth stealing for! Half hates the other half. Voting and buying a car from a car salesman should be as illegal or as shunned as gambling and hard drugs.

Micky you made my head and my heart ache. This happens when your head is snatched out of the sand of denial (no not de Nile) and reality kicks you square in the groin.
I thought myself a person that seeks truth and looks at life with eyes wide open. I read this hub in depth and I'll tell you why. I've managed to stay clear of any articles or stories rearding 911 conspiracy theories. To me those that believed our government would murder innocent people for power and money were nutjobs.
The decision to read your hub was made purely because I trust you. Your are a Marine (there's no such thing as an ex Marine). Jarhead (scuse the use of this term, but I'm a grunts brat and the mother of a wingnut so I get my jabs in when I can) who suffered through Nam. I think you, as well as many of your brothen had their eyes opened upon return to the US. So I trust what you have to say, and I now believe there is truth to the suspicions.
I have to admit that I had my suspicions; melting steel, total distruction of the buildings in so little time, where were the rescue airships that are always sent when restricted airspace is invaded. But I wouldn't or couldn't admit in my heart of hearts that people would kill the innocent for money and power. I know I'm not alone. Thank you for this hub, thank you for opening my eyes, thank you for sharing the truth.

I have just spent a couple of hours watching the videos and reading this hub again. Whenever anything bad happens in the world the US government often gets the blame and the rest of the world shakes its collective head and says bring in the psychiatrists. They are crazy. Anyone who talks against THEM is considered crazy. I think a lot of the time it is quite possible that people agree with the majority so as not to attract notice. The fear is already there. In fact most of the world has its head in the sand like the ostrich.
It is true that money talks. It has a very loud and powerful voice.

But I HATE most of the rich. I try to not have "hate" in my vocabulary because hate makes people sick.
But I will speak out for the poor and disenfranchised and many of these "rich" cause the suffering around the world. Business!

No Ma'am I don't think I was aiming much at you. You stated that you were not GOP and your husband was. I have a very dry sense of humor but I do lace it to where nobody notices. If your husband professed to be a Dem I might say the same thing as I did like, "admitting to the problem is a great step" or something like it.

Cover-ups and conspiracies have been occurring since the first recorded battle used for a "case study" but you see no conspiracy. There are conspiracies about DEER HUNTING. There are definitely without a doubt, you can bet all your worth and your soul about this- there are conspiracies that are reality. Money and power are at the center.

I have no idea if my own servicemen brothers will be brothers. There are some who snub like money does. But I try to treat everyone with respect. I do respect the love and service for your country. I appreciate your reading and commenting.
My friend 50 Caliber that has commented above has great hubs. Many people link up to 50. He was a Marine and hero in Vietnam. He thinks "things" are not as they appear. But from his hubs there are many who will hate Obama and liberalism and all kinds of stuff. I don't mean this negatively toward 50. We are friends. But if you're looking for folks who will believe in both parties and particularly hate Obama and liberals- that would be a good start- even though 50 Caliber attracts all minds, I suppose.

Macy's is selling their Bangladesh shirts for $50.

izettl, it is not my aim to make someone mad or to insult or to disappoint. What you may see, I certainly see it, is a man who has personally seen an "injustice system" that should rival NONE as far as ineptness and unfairness. Sure, there are dictatorial regimes and courts that may be loonier, but for heaven's sake- the guy with the most money, best, and most lawyers- can beat any rap? Can win any civil suit? This atrocity that represents a court system that has erred so much that if you searched for "wrongly convicted"- the search cannot ever end. This alone tells me that this government is fake, phony, and has no intention of being fair and upholding God's law, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Now I don't need to bring up a page I've written about this. I don't have to dredge one fact but what I have seen in my personal life- this country is propped up.
There is not one reason that I can say what I do. I'm convinced. I have no gains to attain in this life. I'm short at times because I've said what I say hundreds of times. I'm short, direct, and seeming to be insensitive while the war machines ramble on. Unexploded mines are all over the world. Thanks for the discussion. I know your position and I believe you understand mine. Yours is similar to my dad's who also fought in vietnam. I hate the system right now because it assumes there are only two perspectives- Dem and Repub. This isn't healthy, as you say. We can agree on many points, but I'm afraid we'll still disagree on the 9/11 conspiracy.
This is an impressive hub Micky and I'm sure it took you some time to put it together. I've only read through the hub and not taken in any of the videos and it reminded me a lot of what I had read in the summer of 2004. A friend of mine had directed me in the direction of Project New American Century and the Neo-Conservatives and that summer after coming back from Saudi Arabia for the end of year school break, I was reading lots of web articles about 9/11, and other stuff written by authors like David Icke. It was fascinating stuff but bottom-line was it was beyond the stuff of fiction to the point if you shared it with common people they would say you were barking mad. I read a lot about the CIA, Icke's problem-reaction- solution which ties in with 9/11, and read a lot about declining oil stocks and how much was left. I had also read about Bin Laden being treated in Dubai months before 9/11 and that he was associated with the CIA, and that the invasion of Afghanistan had been planned months before 9/11 so the green light was the 9/11 attack. What you have explained here is great. I don't know what is in the videos but there are so many dots to join up that the common person just can't see the whole picture and it's only really coming to light now because of the lies behind WMD in Iraq and the great loss of life since that invasion.
The bottom line is that 9/11 was an excuse to reason for a bogus war against terror. In fact it was a war on resources to secure more oil reserves to fuel America's economy especially with the likes of the Chinese and the Indian economies developing and becoming more hungry so taking a greater slice of the oil pie and compromising the US's potential oil supply. With young patriotic men seeing what they saw against their own country they became lambs to the slaughter serving their greedy master quite conveniently and not America's interests of peace. With the recession now, and people losing jobs, oh how convenient it is for young men to find work by joining up. It keeps them busy and off the streets. If America didn't need so much oil to maintain its materialistic - buy and throw away society then there wouldn't be such a need for the black stuff. Unfortunately oil is a huge part of the way of life from transportation, fertilisers for growing, plastics for CD covers etc - the list goes on. If we desired less then it we'd use less oil but because the more we want -eat, drink, new, faster, bigger then the more oil is needed. For economies to grow you need people to spend more money and buy more. Many Americans spend a large part of their salary servicing debts and the Chinese produce more and more for the US to buy. There's so many things that people have to think about when it come to the conflicts that have arisen in this new millenium. The more I learn the sicker I become when I think about it. Nothing really surprises me anymore Micky. But it can be quite depressing but we can only do our best. That's why I hate politics but I must admit it fires me up and I do find it interesting even if it is very distasteful. I don't trust too many people these days apart from my parents and about a handful of good friends.
Enough of my rant and must go and rest now. Keep fighting for the truth brother - I'm with you all the way!

The remarkable fact about the Constitution of the United States is that it exists at all. Exceptionally educated, reasonable men joined together in a common cause and created the best document on how to govern a nation that I am aware of. IT MEANS EVERYTHING!
The “CONSTITUTION” provided the legal framework so that the slavery could be abolished!
Check your countries history,
Lincoln stayed within the confines of the constitution in his argument that the actions of the founding fathers dictated an understanding that Federal government should control slavery. See the Cooper Union Address.
We had to go through a civil war, but the legal framework provided in the Constitution provided for the LEGAL abolition of slavery, the rejoining of former states and admitting of new slave free states.

One of the very few bright spots in a very opaque landscape has been the Oathkeepers and what they represent; A rededication and reminder to obey the Constitution, a thoughtful understanding of one’s own oath and a list of things THEY WILL NOT DO in honor of their Oath to the Constitution. Mostly older retirees, disgusted at what is happening after them, are vocal, but I have a feeling a lot of the younger oath takers are watching and wondering. Which is a damn good thing. The younger crowd are the ones on the front lines, taking the punishment and dishing it out, they are looking for help and guidance, NOW. The Constitution is the best thing we have to offer them IMO. The best chance for this nation IMO.
I have not served. I have not taken that oath. The only one I took was at school, forced to pledge to a flag. I have my own pledge now. ‘I pledge allegiance to the flag and to the Constitution for which it stands’ is how it starts.

The constitution was a very well thought-out document for the world to see where it stood. Of course it was hypocritical. Perhaps most of the signers owned slaves.
The illegal/fraudulent election of 1868 shows that the constitution is just a piece of paper.
That was the end of "reconstruction of the South. Blacks were picked up off the streets and charged with false and petty crimes. Their fines could not be paid off. This "debt" that the black person "owed" was transferred or sold to a SLAVE MASTER who would work the NEW SLAVE TO DEATH. In so many cases men were chained until death. worked until death. Part of the golden rule is to have respect for someone’s opinion, as you would wish someone to respect your own opinion.
It is my opinion that the [anti]Patriot acts can be repealed and reasonably lawful citizens can again rest in their homes without fear of SWAT team intrusion.
Even if everything in the 9-11 Coincidence videos is correct, repeal of the Act could still be accomplished.
I feel the fight is worth it. The issue is hope vs. despair. The time is now, not judgment day.
The concern is the nation’s youth. Do you tell a 9 year old that there is no hope? Do you tell a teenager that the fix is in, forget about it and run to the hills? Do you tell a new soldier or officer that they are merely pawns with no mind of their own and nothing to offer? Or do you say ‘The country got twisted but it can still be straightened out.’
It may turn out to be untrue, but I think it is better to fight for a good losing cause, than giving up to a bad one.

The following is a story within the book ‘East of Eden’ by John Steinbeck. It portrays my feelings about the subject better than I have. Three good friends who rarely meet have a drink together and exchange views of the world. Adam is an emotionally wounded rich man, Samuel is the Irish workingman, poor in riches, yet rich in spirit who wants to see Adam improve and Lee, Adams Chinese servant, who is the glue of Adam’s remaining family and perhaps, the whole Novel as well. Lee begins;
“Do you remember when you read us the sixteen verses of the fourth chapter of Genesis and we argued about them?”
“I do indeed. And that’s a long time ago.”
“Ten years nearly,” said Lee. “Well, the story bit deeply into me and I went into it word for word. The more I thought about the story, the more profound it became to me. Then I compared the translations we have—and they were fairly close. There was only one place that bothered me. The King James version says this—it is when Jehovah has asked Cain why he is angry. Jehovah says, ‘If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.’ It was the ‘thou shalt’ that struck me, because it was a promise that Cain would conquer sin.”
Samuel nodded. “And his children didn’t do it entirely,” he said.
Lee sipped his coffee. “Then I got a copy of the American Standard Bible. It was very new then. And it was different in this passage. It says, ‘Do thou rule over him.’ Now this is very different. This is not a promise, it is an order. And I began to stew about it. I wondered what the original word of the original writer had been that these very different translations could be made.”
Samuel put his palms down on the table and leaned forward and the old young light came into his eyes. “Lee,” he said, “don’t tell me you studied Hebrew!”
Lee said, “I’m going to tell you. And it’s a fairly long story. Will you have a touch of ng-ka-py?”
“You mean the drink that tastes of good rotten apples?”
“Yes. I can talk better with it.”
“Maybe I can listen better,” said Samuel.
While Lee went to the kitchen Samuel asked, “Adam, did you know about this?”
“No,” said Adam. “He didn’t tell me. Maybe I wasn’t listening.”
Lee came back with his stone bottle and three little porcelain cups so thin and delicate that the light shone through them. “Dlinkee Chinee fashion,” he said and poured the almost black liquor. “There’s a lot of wormwood in this. It’s quite a drink,” he said. “Has about the same effect as absinthe if you drink enough of it.”
Samuel sipped the drink. “I want to know why you were so interested,” he said.
“Well, it seemed to me that the man who could conceive this great story would know exactly what he wanted to say and there would be no confusion in his statement.”
“You say ‘the man.’ Do you then not think this is a divine book written by the inky finger of God?”
“I think the mind that could think this story was a curiously divine mind. We have had a few such minds in China too.”
“I just wanted to know,” said Samuel. “You’re not a Presbyterian after all.”
“I told you I was getting more Chinese. Well, to go on, I went to San Francisco to the headquarters of our family association. Do you know about them? Our great families have centers where any member can get help or give it. The Lee family is very large. It takes care of its own.”
“I have heard of them,” said Samuel.
“You mean Chinee hatchet man fightee Tong war over slave girl?”
“I guess so.”
“It’s a little different from that, really,” said Lee. “I went there because in our family there are a number of ancient reverend gentlemen who are great scholars. They are thinkers in exactness. “They are fine old men. They smoke their two pipes of opium in the afternoon and it rests and sharpens them, and they sit through the night and their minds are wonderful. I guess no other people have been able to use opium well.”
Lee dampened his tongue in the black brew. “I respectfully submitted my problem to one of these sages, read him the story, and told him what I understood from it. The next night four of them met and called me in. We discussed the story all night long.”
Lee laughed. “I guess it’s funny,” he said. “I know I wouldn’t dare tell it to many people. Can you imagine four old gentlemen, the youngest is over ninety now, taking on the study of Hebrew? They engaged a learned rabbi. They took to the study as though they were children. Exercise books, grammar, vocabulary, simple sentences. You should see Hebrew written in Chinese ink with a brush! The right to left didn’t bother them as much as it would you, since we write up to down. Oh, they were perfectionists! They went to the root of the matter.”
“And you?” said Samuel.
“I went along with them, marveling at the beauty of their proud clean brains. I began to love my race, and for the first time I wanted to be Chinese. Every two weeks I went to a meeting with them, and in my room here I covered pages with writing. I bought every known Hebrew dictionary. But the old gentlemen were always ahead of me. It wasn’t long before they were ahead of our rabbi; he brought a colleague in. Mr. Hamilton, you should have sat through some of those nights of argument and discussion. The questions, the inspection, oh, the lovely thinking—the beautiful thinking.

The King James translation makes a promise in ‘Thou shalt,’ meaning that men will surely triumph over sin. But the Hebrew word, the word timshel—‘Thou mayest’— that gives a choice. It might be the most important word in the world. That says the way is open. That throws it right back on a man. For if ‘Thou mayest’—it is also true that ‘Thou mayest not.’ Don’t you see?”
“Yes, I see. I do see. But you do not believe this is divine law. Why do you feel its importance?”
“Ah!” said Lee. “I’ve wanted to tell you this for a long time. I even anticipated your questions and I am well prepared. Any writing which has influenced the thinking and the lives of innumerable people is important. Now, there are many millions in their sects and churches who feel the order, ‘Do thou,’ and throw their weight into obedience. And there are millions more who feel predestination in ‘Thou shalt.’ Nothing they may do can interfere with what will be. But ‘Thou mayest’! Why, that makes a man great, that gives him stature with the gods, for in his weakness and his filth and his murder of his brother he has still the great choice. He can choose his course and fight it through and win.” Lee’s voice was a chant of triumph.
Adam said, “Do you believe that, Lee?”
“Yes, I do. Yes, I do. It is easy out of laziness, out of weakness, to throw oneself into the lap of deity, saying, ‘I couldn’t help it; the way was set.’ But think of the glory of the choice! That makes a man a man. A cat has no choice, a bee must make honey. There’s no godliness there.
