A Poem of Cycling-What Can I Say?

70

By Micky Dee

What can I say, in a positive way?

How can I sway you to come out and play,

On a lean, clean machine in a beautiful scene?

See all 22 photos

Who of you will dare to put wind in your hair,

Rain in your face and leave never a trace,

Of having ever been there.

When it's all said and done, what makes cycling fun?

Is it better in winter, or in the hot sun?

Do you like it warm wherever you go?

Or when your tires go "crunch" in the snow?

Do you like racing with crowds that cheer?

Or touring along with with a bird's song in your ear?

I can ride for hours by beautiful flowers.

Mile after mile with bugs in my smile.

I find rolling hills to be so sublime,

And even the hardest, mountainous climb!

Can you tell me why my heart pines,

For quiet country roads with Burma Shave signs?

Sometimes I get thrills from "screaming down-hills",

Or a fog covered road laced with daffodils.

It's easy to see what it all means to me.

I've seen places and faces as fine as can be.

Often at night with stars so bright,

I ride with my love in the pale moonlight.

Past farms with cows and stacks of hay.

Crickets and frogs cheer us on our way.

We ride in the mornings and then at sunsets

And know that this is as good as it gets.

Not even flat tires can alter our mood.

When I'm tired I dine on the best tasting food.

What can I do to get through to you?

Why should you ride? I haven't a clue.

Sometimes after long rides in groups we might sit,

And all will agree, "IT FEELS SO GOOD WHEN WE QUIT."

Yes, that is I with the ladies who were good sports. These three ladies were known by some as the "tractor queens" as they got a ride on a tractor back in on a 60 mile ride. They were too tired to finish their first one, the "Burnsville Metric". I'm rarely in photos because I am the one who takes them generally. My friend, Rike, instigated the picture taking by someone else. I am also below with the world upside down.

I live in the USA, North Carolina to be exact. We have great cycling here. The University of North Carolina is close as well as Duke and others. This makes a bigger cycling community than a lot of of other places. We have rolling hills. Some are quite hard. The outlying area is mostly farming and quite beautiful with low car traffic.

Go figure! A poem about bicycling. For a minute it was sounding like Dr Seuss; would you could you in the rain? on a train?.... love it.

What can we expect Kim?

People think I'm quite insane!

I'll put my bike on a train.

I'll ride my bike out in the rain.

I'll ride my bike with lots of pain.

I my get a slam with green eggs and ham.

But I just have bicycles on the brain!

Thank you very much Kim!

Inspirational!

Brings back memories of riding my bike,

and leaves me inspired to try it again

to see if these mushy muscles will spike

with old strength and ride with such joy again!

Hi Micky,

I thought I'd stop by today and take a good gander at your hubs! I love this poem and appreciate the beautiful photos that you've shared here - makes you want to get on your bike and start pushing the pedals!. I love cycling but I don't cycle that much though. I enjoy cycling to the nearby town or down to the sea and then along the coast. I would love to one day either do a very long walk or a very long bicycle ride for charity. I enjoy those sort of challenges. The longest cycle ride I've ever done was from Glasgow in Scotland to Inverness then past Loch Ness to Fort William. Scotland is a beautiful place to explore by bike - just surrounded by stunning natural beauty indeed!

Thanks for sharing this great hub and now's my chance to kindly reciprocate and tap dance a few steps on your buttons! What goes around comes around as they say!

Happy and safe riding my blessed friend!

(or 'Safari Njema' - have a good journey as they say in Swahili)
