Mickey's Favorite Bicycle "Descending" Videos

Do Not Try This At Home!
The videos get better as you go toward the bottom. My favorite is probably at the bottom. You might turn your sound down a notch or three. The wind gets pretty loud.
I've tried to add music and I've searched for editing programs but so far I can't trust anything. I've gotten some programs that will expire in a few weeks that didn't work. I have no idea why they don't allow me to edit as they promise. Hate to put money into something that doesn't work.
Bear in mind that I'm riding my bike and holding a camera in my right hand. The only hand that I have to brake with is my left. The left brake is the front brake. This is not the ideal brake to use when wanting to slow down. Notice that I can usually keep up and pass the other riders while holding a camera.
Do not try this at home! (or anywhere)
Enjoy! Really- enjoy!
It seems to me that videos always play best after they are played at least once! The first time I watch a video there is a constant "stopping" and seemingly a "rewinding" that the "system" has to perform. If you see and hear the video stop you might let them all play "quietly" on their own and come back and play them again!
It should be very smooth- music and video!
IFOs & Michael Descend Highway 80 -Frankie & Charlie
Micky Dee and IFOs Ride 80
This descent goes by one of my favorite places ever. I've taken many photos of this little spot. I always wished I could do a "time-lapsed" photo sequence of this area. It is so different in different seasons. Sometimes there are hay bales. Sometimes there is corn. Sometimes there are just furrows, and so on.
My friends and guests on this ride are Dennis Besselman and Paul Cook from Ohio. Those two are so lucky- I hear it's warm there all year 'round!
Micky Dee & Bicycle Inn Guests Descending Bald Mountain
There is Schronce Creek on one side and Bald Mountain is the descent on the other. Bald or Bee Log (what we used to call it) is more fun I think. If you're at the "gap" of Bald Mountain the descent will be about 7 miles long. The first two miles of that descent is pretty technical. There are a few "switch-backs to navigate. After the first 2 miles the grade is not as steep and the curves are not as sharp. There are homes further down and homes can always have dogs. I haven't seen many but it could happen. The descent goes on a long time it seems. It's very pleasant with well kept homes and friendly people.
Micky Dee Descending Roan Mountain
The Roan Descent
This descent I've done maybe hundreds of times. There are rocks in some curves but I was between some of those curves. I've painted skull and cross bones warning of the most dangerous curves. It's hard to get much over 40 or so coming down from Roan. There is one stretch where 50 and better can be reached- usually by a tandem. There are dogs occasionally further down. Of course there are deer and bear and every other critter around too.
Micky Dee Descending The Blue Ridge Parkway From Craggy Gardens
Craggy Gardens Descent
This is fairly fast coming down from Craggy Gardens toward Asheville. There was a big fellow from Ohio in front of me. He was sitting up on the bars which slowed him/us down some but it was a pretty good speed anyway.
Further down the road is always in need of repair. There are many potholes to be careful with.
For those wishing to descend properly- sitting up like this can slow you down -but--the safest place to be is down in the "hooks" when descending, particularly if you want to go faster. Sitting upright raises your center of gravity. The higher you are sittin the more likely you are to fall. For safety- if you are trying to descend fast--be in the "hooks" (the curved part of the bars). Also if you are approaching a sharp curve keep your hands in the hooks, keep your hands on the brake levers, and push your butt back off the saddle just like mountain biking. For small handed people -if you are from the "flat lands" your brakes may be adjusted so tightly that you cannot safely be in the hook and pull the brakes in correctly- at least without "reaching" the fingers out. If you aren't sure about what I am speaking of send me an email.
Micky Dee Descending The Blue Ridge Parkway From Mount Mitchell
My Favorite- The Blue Ridge Parkway
This is probably my favorite. It's smooth. I was lucky in panning the camera as I was passing the other rider. I got a good view toward Linville Gorge, Hawks Bill, and Table Rock.

I more than enjoyed them babydoll! You took me for a bike ride tonight with you!! IT WAS GREAT!! THANK YOU!!!
Wow! You made me want to jump up and get on the trainer in preparation for riding in the mountains. Great job with the videos...made me smile and wish for Spring even more, if that is possible. Hope you get out on the roads this weekend with the warmer temps.
Thanks for the ride Micky, that was fantastic, it was like riding a real bicycle, but a little to fast for me. Thank you for sharing. godspeed. creativeone59
Micky you must always put the warning"don't try this at home" when you're racing downhill like this.Maybe the sounds of the wind scared me too but micky, dear micky please don't frighten dotty old ladies like me. You look as fit as a 20yr old but Iwas still afraid that one gust of wind , as you were speeding downhill , could have thrown you headfirst over the handlebars.!!!!!!!I don't think I'll try it. Best stay with my computer. You are the best.!
I love you too, man. I am glad you are enjoying the wheels and are putting them to better use than I. I still practice the descending in the drops that you taught me. Be safe out there. Thanks for being a friend and sharing so much of yourself.
These are great. Hand holding the camera sounds risky though! I sometimes mounted a camera on the front lamp bracket, which was fine as long as the road surface was good, but not unless.
I can´t watch those videos... they don´t show up. Is there any problem with hubpages or is it my computer?
Well, I´ll go for ride instead :D
Mick, there is no joy here after 3 reloads I'm seeing black boxes
They are showing up on firefox 3.5.8 / ubuntu 9.10 linux computer. Great vids, nice and clear without too much vibration coming through to the video. You do get a true sense of speed.
Mick, gonna have to take your word for it, I've tried Explorer and dropping my firewalls but I get black boxes on firefox and a white page on explorer. Are these on youtube? or any other media like face book or sumthin'? I can sign up to see them? or get them via e-mail....
Duztee
50 Caliber, it sounds like a problem with the video codec plugins for your computer. The video file extension is most likely associated to a codec which can't play it.
hey Micky Dee, you have been on my mind lately, been eating fish tacos more and more. I see you are not only adventurous on the page, but also on the side of very high mountains. It looks like you are flying, like a bird in these videos, especially when the camera pans over the edge. I needed that vacation this a.m. I might drive that route one day, but don't see myself riding up that road on a bike any time soon. Keep sharing!
Mick Dee-
Wow, I was able to get them all -and am still recovering!
Fantastic ,brilliant, exciting hub.The first two films looked so like Wicklow-where our 'Tours de France' winner
used to train.
Congrats on a hub in a million.
Micky, Be careful when you hold the camera,
And youve got a remembrance now to all the beautiful rides, keep it intact Mick,
I love all of it, specially the last one, Maita
Love your videos! I can barely ride a bike with tow hands. Forget about take pictures and videos! It was nice to ride with you, kind of:) Thanks for sharing that with me, Micky.
The VDOs showed up on my IE 7. And look wonderful. Thanks for taking us for a bike ride. Very nice.. Suggession: May be you could add a little commentry or music .. you can do that on youtube and then post a link within hubpage.
Anyways.. be careful out there..that was a thrill ride.
I had some trouble viewing them myself, I enjoyed the one I did see. It did look a little dangerous. Thanks for sharing. take care.
I watched them all. Beautiful! You have nerves of steel.
Hi Micky - I did take the time to watch all your videos.. beautiful.. and with nothing but the wind for sound added to the beauty of them. I will be honest and say, as I was watching, thinking to myself, what a great escape, when one needs to get away from any stress. I will be back to read more of you hubs.. with regards to 'fear'.. Keeping being Fearless, yet nothing to Fear.. is what I am sensing about you in this short time...
Dern but I couldn't get them to work even on the Yahoo link. Will have to try update on media player, so thanks for tip.
Also wanted to say thank you for your 'service to our country' in Vietnam. My brother was there, injured, PTSD too and ended up teacher of the year in district several years. But the history never goes away.
I am glad to be your fan.
I have enjoyed a look down memory lane by visiting your site. I rode and finished Mitchell in 97,98,&99. My best time was 7:04 and I was please with it,I was in my fifties then. Lower back problems now restrict me from aggressive riding and the crowds caused me fear, so I gave up my spot of the then 900 line-up so others could have a shot at the mountain. I was happy about doing that. At age 65 I still ride, but not aggressively like I use to, but I still love to make my own breeze. You keep up the good work, thanks.

Oh my gosh! this was so great! You took me riding with you!!!! yipeeeeeeeeee!
Firstly my friend, I thought you were going to drive into that person in the first video and I jumped...but I can't be tricked for the second and third video..yes I can..I am lying..you went over the lines into the other lane and I felt my stomach take a plunge...and then you did it again--over the lines-and into that tunnel! Whew! Pretty cool.
This was like Disney land-where you stand in the arena and watch the huge screen-yeah, like Disney but different-my stomach did a flew flops but I loved it!!!!
I have driven on the Blue ridge Parkway! The mountains are beautiful and you got great shots of the puffy clouds and mountains as you passed that rider! Very cool.
Oh Mickydee..thanks for taking me for a bike ride with you tonight! This was so very cool. ROCK ON!!!
