Micky Dee, His Bike, Don Quixote, and Points of Light

Points Of Light

“Even though you’ve painted it I can tell that ride.”

I heard from a cyclist as he pulled alongside.

“You’re still riding that same old frame.

That’s the frame you built that has no name.”

I said, “That’s not true, oh quite contraire,

This is a great frame that is quite rare.

It wears no name as we all can see.

But this great frame was made by me.

I chose the investment cast bottom bracket, lugs, dropouts,

I chose all the right choices so there would be no doubts.

It’s all Columbus SL tubing, the best in its day.

Each tube from the seat lug is a double tapered stay.

I mitered each tube and brazed every joint.

I filed all the lugs and tapered each point.

I cut my initial into the bottom bracket with pride.

I constructed every part to insure a great ride.

Before I even started I made very sure,

That this bicycle would start out very pure.

I showed no haste in making it right.

I carved into each lug a point of light.

Two stars in the top lugs can be seen very clearly.

In the bottom lug I carved a cross I hold dearly.

These tubes are all double butted and seamless.

And though I seem to ride alone I am not team-less.

The paint on this frame doesn’t give it much flash,

Someday I may crash, this bike and body may trash.

Yes, this frame is very old, just like me.

Perhaps I’m just another Don Quixote.

But this steed and I will always rise to fight,

The very good fight for points of light."

I like this my friend, just beware of those windmills. LOL You are a gifted individual Micky. Beautiful frame and I hope it lasts for many good years. You are a fine poet too.

I have a very soft spot in my heart for Bianchi.I sold thousands of them when I was a bicycle shop owner. Bianchi is well over a hundred years old. But- I neever heard Phil Liggett say "Bianchi" correctly. Thanks Sage.

Thanks Ralwus. I almost put a picture of you on my "Clothes Make The Man" hub. You're always dressed so appropriately. Thank you sir.

You can't beat something crafted from your very own hands.

My bike is just a conventional off the shelve bike, a dawes horizon.

However, it has picked up a few knocks and grazes in the paint work from my various bike rides and tours which now make it unique to me.

A small paint chip from locking the bike in bruges, a graze on the left pedal for taking a corner too fast with some black ice.

Micky Dee, always good to read about things people really connect with. Like the picture of the wheel-less, saddle-less frame - some poetry in the angles and symmetry there.

I like the way you integrated theology with biking. It makes for a very interesting image!

Nicely done, Don Quixote! I like your poem...it tells a lot about you and your love of cycling. I also like that your bike has no name...another great trait about you.

I remember those Dawes. Most were hand-made. Originally they used their feet but the workmanship wasn't that good- barumpump. A little bike "dealer" humor there. I do remember the Dawes. Great bikes. Yours has character! Thanks Drwibble!

Thanks Storytellersrus. You know- it's all a true story except for the actual dialogue at the time. We were all on in a race with a hundred or so people in the pack. My bike's critic would be dropped soon enough, but it's all true.

Hi Micky both the bike and the poem are well crafted. Hand built bikes are very expensive in the UK ... it is easy to see why the work involved and the precision required. My daughter has a Pashley because she wanted something that was suitable for cycling to work with. Thanks Micky.

Thank you 2uesday for stopping and talking bikes. Bikes can be so good for us. Tell your daughter, "happy trails".

Reallly enjoyed the poem, Micky! It is a beautiful frame, too. I'm not much into biking, yet your poem says a lot without the knowledge to me. Thanks.

I am beginning to see that you are really in to cycling...not sure whatever gave me that idea though?

Where do you stash the lance on that thing...BTW...Don Quixote? Even though I don't cycle much...your Poem had me peddaling a cycle right along with you on this poem journey.

Great Cyclist Poem, MD!

Oh Manlypoetryman- compliments from a bard like you can inflate my punkin-head. I have many pictures of Lance because originally I thought "maybe it can't happen again, again, and again...". Now- he is the perfect example of the Tour de France racer. I don't get "real" current TV. I didn't then when he won. I've since gotten the video for every Tour de France he was in and I've studied. Everyone, it seems, has studied him. I'm almost afraid that doing a hub on this great cyclist is "too" redundant. Maybe sometime I'll do a hub. Thanks MPM for pedaling along!

Beauty of a frame and the color is wonderful. Lovely shade of blue and your poem to is sublime and rhymes with the time. Now pace your race and stay atop on your saddle real tight as you turn those corners on this well balanced fine tuned alloyed frame. All the best Micky, keep on cruising and a tuning in with your creative genius. peace bro.
