Ode To A Unicorn
77
Once upon a time I loved a pretty Unicorn
As pretty as any that the sun would adorn.
This mysteriously beautiful creature
Never had a horn or any odd feature.
Her beauty I would immediately endorse.
She never remotely resembled a horse.
She never appeared to have a billy-goat beard.
But her ability to fly was one to be feared.
As sure as my heart is sorely torn,
She never grew a pointy horn.
A mythical creature she still seems to be.
I fell in love with her and she with me.
The Unicorn is not only a fierce and fabulous beast
But she was good, selfless, and beautiful, at least.
She wasn’t conceived out of human fears.
She was really real though unreal she appears.
Unlike other unicorns she was not solitary.
Her love for others was very customary.
She snatched my heart from a murky deep.
She held it for her own to keep.
When no one else acknowledged my sighs
When no one else would hear my cries,
She spanned across a sea of lies.
I saw nothing but love in her lovely eyes.
When again my life was fraudulently taken,
When again by family and friends forsaken,
And my life had to go in a new direction,
The Unicorn showered me with love and affection.
She loved and adored me when no one else did.
My wounded heart she took and carefully hid.
We flew against the wind and sheets of rain.
Flying together would always dissipate pain.
I had to go back and try to recover the past.
This left both the Unicorn and me aghast.
The memory is so vivid and distinct
Is this mythical Unicorn now extinct?
The Unicorn was just a fantasy you say?
Ah, but I reminisce and remember the day,
When the mythical Unicorn was real,
And she rode another steed of steel.
Perhaps my life will remain dutiful
But she will always remain beautiful.
Nothing can make me feel so forlorn
As when I’m missing my sweet Unicorn.
"My
horn shall be exalted like the horn of the Unicorn."
The Book of Psalms
"He
hath as it were the strength of a unicorn"
The Book of Numbers
"Will
the Unicorn be willing to serve thee?"
Job
According to the book of Genesis, God gave Adam the task of naming everything he saw. In some translations of the Bible, the Unicorn was the first animal named; thereby, elevating it above all other beasts in the universe. When Adam and Eve left paradise, the Unicorn went with them and came to represent purity and chastity. Thus, the Unicorn's purity in the Western legends stems from its Biblical beginnings.
The Bible also offers an explanation about why the Unicorn has not been seen for so long. During the flood that engulfed the world for 40 days and 40 nights, Noah took two of each animal to safety ; but Unicorns were not among them. A Jewish folk tale mentions they were originally on board but demanded so much space and attention that Noah banished them. They either drowned or managed to swim during the flood and still survive somewhere in the world or, as some believe, evolved into the narwhale.

Hi Mickydee! What a great poem. I am sitting here thinking about the unicorn and the Bible and Noah. I had no idea that this unicorn existed in Genesis. Really really interesting! I am really digging the Unicorn-Xing sign!! Where do you get all these awesome pictures! Love the first one the best!

Well done, an enjoyable read. Thanks for sharing your creativity.
Lovely expressions, Mickey! The lore of Unicorn Mythology is quite a lovely creature, indeed.
Aye, yet another goodie from the Micky Dee, Tree of good fruit! Sail on you peddler of bikes and fine words!
nice one, a lot of effort went into that, and it was worthwhile
You popped up on my hotmail radar this am. So I took a look at your unicorn book. Love the tapestry pic the best. Those medieval artists are uninhibited aren't they? Everything has meaning with them. The unicorn with the girl must mean something? Thanks for another enjoyable read.
A lovley poetic look at this mystical animal, you put together the poetry and pictures very well. My favourite image is of the flying unicorn.
Is the picture of the tapestry you found was the first time that particular fashion was recorded? just joking. She looks a bit like a mermaid. Thank you for sharing the images and your poetry. 2uesday.
I must admit, this poem made me laugh. It was a mixture of great classical style and some fun embedded!
Thank you for the tapestry pics, I have wonderful memories of my daughter and I seeing them in Paris. And am also reminded of listening to the Irish Rovers when, I was little, sing the Unicorn song!
I read you were a "truth seeker", and I had my doubts, until I saw this hub about unicorns, now I know you are for real.
Fantastic-I love this,it also reminds me of the song 'The lovliest of all was the unicorn'
Thanks for a really enjoyabole read!
Love and peace
Tony
"You'll see green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
You're never gonna see no unicorns"
Shel Silverstein
I loved this song when I was a child. I love your poem too! Thanks
Ha Ha Micky -may I use your page to publicly show appreciation to Tammy for promoting Irish music-Good on ya Tammy(and thank you Micky)(
wonderful and mythical creature, and your poem is touching sad and wonderful. HMMMMMM I wonder where your unicorn is now, but I am sure she will be with you one day, in one form of a unicorn, another unicorn who will love you as much and even more ...
It is a lovely creature too, and yout touched me with this one Micky, Take care, Maita
What a beautiful hub. It was a pleasure to read and the pictures were absolutely stunning.
Micky Dee - Not sure how I missed this one. I, like you, love unicorns as well. However, the unicorn in your poem, goes far beyond a mystical creature almost to the point of becoming real.
A beautiful poem that is heartfelt, touching and reaches into the depths of your spirit.

Maybe it's just me but there is a lot of subtle truth in there. The armor cracks and a little light seeps in. Great poem Mickey.
Nice poem and I like the pictures too - thanks for sharing
Nice escape from reality! I, too, couldn't help but take note of the tapestry with the unusual fashion. A nursing mom design this or a man? Beautiful collection of photos. I'd love to see a photograph of one! so are you even THINKING in rhyme these days?
Thank you...
sweet verses there Micky :)
I never knew those Biblical info bout unicorns..thanks for sharing! :) I always learn a lot of things from you my friend.
:) really? well then I hope you learn good things though :p Thanks Mik!
Maybe it's just me, but so much of that beautiful unicorn seemed symbolic. I think you have a huge heart, and deserve the best. Absolutely lovely. So glad I found you on hubpages.
Symbolic. Lovely. Nice escape from reality. Why do most of the comments seem so trivial - so superfluous - to me?
They just don't see... they don't see what we see... the power... the truth... the reality... the intensity... of what is there... what was there. The unicorn has new meaning for me now... new reality and yet new mythology... new heights that are unattainable... that I never even imagined... this shoulder is all you now, all you and me... our fantasy-land that once upon a time was there... and never will be again.
always did love a unicorn, and wished that I had one for flying across this land, what a superb mode of transportation in rush hour, to fly high above the idling cars below mired on networks of freeways, A beast that offers a convenient place to put my bagel, slipping her horn through the hole of my breakfast bread, while I sip
coffee and relax on her smooth glide through the skies. I enjoyed this much~~~MFB III
man,your inspiring to me!
I love unicorns... And I love this poem.. I like the transition from poetry to informative hubness... My moms only tattoo is of a unicorn on her shoulder... So it grabbed my attention as hers has for years! :)
As long as the doors stay open.. I'll be here!
haha nice! *stated very dramatically* I have arrived!
I bet at the end if the flood Noah had a lot to think about. ~aloha~
Love unicorns!

Humorous, satirical, and thought provoking...A very well crafted poem I thoroughly enjoyed with my morning coffee...Thank you, brother Mickey...Larry
Much to ponder with this poem and I can also see you and MFB riding high with your breakfast bread and coffee atop your unicorns gazing at all the clogged traffic below. Seriously, I enjoyed your poetry and loved the photos of the tapestries.
