Procuress
I was driving through a small town and saw a woman waving, I thought, frantically. Maybe she was frantic. I thought something was terribly wrong. I was a volunteer fireman, trained in CPR and as an EMT Basic.
I stopped. I was correct. The woman was down on her luck, down on life, and down by the side of the road. I didn't know how to help her. I still don't. I gave her some money.
We are our brother's keeper. We are also our sister's keeper.
I didn't have much money to give her. I was family oriented. I felt the strong need to hoard the little money I had, for my own family.
I wanted nothing in return for the money I gave.
It would be cheating my daughter.
It would be cheating "society" as I would like to see it.
It would have been cheating the woman. She should not have to be in the company of strangers for any reason. She should not have to sell herself for basic needs. She should not endanger herself for a place to live or for food to eat. She should not have to compromise her body, mind, and soul.
It would have been cheating me. I want to be a better person. I want the same things for that woman as I would want for my daughter.
I want "the lady by the side of the road" to have a home, nourishment, clothing, a lot of things, and respect.
I don't want to be better than the "lady by the side of the road".
I want the best for the "Lady By The Side Of The Road".
When I make a reference to Jesus, it is not that I want you to join a religion, a cult, or a club. It is because this Man lived a perfect life. He strove to raise the beggar, the sick, the sinners, the down trodden to a loftier position in life, or perhaps their own minds.
Who would I be, to want anything less?
I am not very smart. I write about what I see. I have worn a lot of hats, and I've been in some "other sides of life". They are not "so other side". The "other sides of life" are far too common.
The strains being put on Americans today, because of the gulf between "haves and have-nots", may push and pull the human tolerances apart, right here, right now, before our eyes.
I could give you facts about prostitution, from the beginning of recorded history. I could give you the definitions, synonyms, the diseases associated with sexual slavery, and sexual slavery is what it is. It is human trafficking. But the worst result of "it", is what "it" does to the spirit of one who is enslaved as this.
The repercussions of being treated as a "thing" or a "tool", instead of a human being worthy of what humans are worthy of, and capable of, is demoralizing to the point of "animalizing" and worse. The "tool" is not worthy of what a normal pet is afforded.
So, I'm not smart. I don't know what I can do besides to throw some bits of money to them. I don't know how to treat the homeless, but to throw some pieces money.
I don't want to ignore them. I want to inquire. I want to know how they came to be. But how does one do that without intruding, without embarrassing, and without hurting?
How does one become involved, without becoming involved?
If the "truly educated", the affluent, the movers, and shakers cannot solve this riddle -they are no smarter than I, and no smarter than the other slaves.
It also makes no sense to punish the victim. Instead- punish the "buyers" not the "sellers".
Lady By The Side Of The Road
She flagged me down in a one horse town.,
Hopping and waving her arms all around.
I pulled over quickly to see what was wrong,
Hoping more help would soon come along.
I had to know what words would be spoken.
She said she was alone and her heart was broken.
I asked her how she had come to be there.
Her love had left her and no one seemed to care.
She had no money or food to eat.
So she’s standing by the road with strangers to meet.
“I’ll do anything for ten dollars she said.”
I gave her a twenty and drove on instead.
I guess she’s standing by the road turning tricks.
But what came first, the tricks or the pricks?
If only there were an ending to this tired episode,
And the "Lady Standing By The Side Of The Road".

You are more than smart! You are so kind and caring. This world would be better if we have more people like you,Micky Dee!
Wow Mickey it was good to read a story as refreshing as this, loved it.
This is always such a sad situation, a good person wanting to help with a problem that is bigger then any one person and unsure how to really make a difference. Some say that we should not give money to the homeless and desperate for petty reasons, usually to do with what they will do with it. This to me is a part of the problem, what business is it of mine what they do with, I just want these people who have obviously seen the worst of humanity to see that it also possesses generosity too! It is sad to say that I have seen more generosity in people who can barely afford it themselves then from those who can afford it several times over. You wish you could have done more, the mark of a caring and decent man and you should know you probably gave more then just 20 bucks that day, you likely gave the message that this world can be kind sometimes as well. Having been poor and even homeless in my life I can say that I might have become this desperate if it had not been for the kindness of friends who were only just a bit better off then I in having a place to live, I got their couch and more importantly my self respect did not have to suffer at all. I managed to build a life for myself that I can call happy because of that generosity and I know from my experience that generosity is never wrong.
You are indeed an amazingly caring and wise man.
hi Micky, hmmm, I wish all people are like you, caring and you have wisdom too,
Thanks for the nice poem too,
Maita
A wise man, will always remain a healthy man
good for you. You might have gotten more than you bargain for(:)
This is an awsome story. :)
Thanks for a great story that was sad, yet inspiring. really nice poem also. Well done.
You did a cruel thing to her , You give her money , it s like helping her for a moment , You give her food and shelter , You shall help her longer , But you give her things to do , believe in , You help her most . But brother you must give her faith too .. SO you shall help her eternally ! To be frank I have no faith in god . But I have faith in love ! You cant help them all , But one s you see , ones who turn towards you ..you can help . Yeah there is no harm in having sex , with her .. only you should love ! Free love man ! Grass roolless
I agree with your answer to Myriad. You did a good thing helping that woman. Why should you defile her just because others have? Your writing shows you are a good person. It is true we cannot help everyone but every small thing we can do helps. It might have given her hope that there is not only misery in the world. Sometimes people drag themselves around day by day thinking everything is hopeless. Just one small thing like you did, giving something and not wanting anything in exchange, could have been the start of different thoughts in her mind.
I know this might sound like a fairy story but who knows?
As we go through life, every little deed we do changes someone´s life for better or worse. It is hoped there is more of good.
Queen Of Nothing Now.
Beneath the
caked-on makeup,
and the tarantula mascara,
the hard lines, and the hungry look,
there is a young girl in ruins,
her tattered soul flapping
in the inner city winds
trying to find a john
but not to relieve herself,
only seeking her jones,
the needle and the rush.
Dress too tight to
breathe accentuates,
all that made her a prom queen once,
now sagging a bit, and scarred,
at the crooks of elbows and knees,
which hold the tracks of her downfall.
Condoms and cigarettes fill her clutch bag,
dreams long since emptied from her soul,
her soles pound the streets each night,
looking for some quick tricks
to make her feel human again,
after the spewing out,
and the injecting in,
she can float like
she did on that float,
in the homecoming parade.
A few more spasms
in the front seat
of a Lexus or a Cad,
"Hell they are all cads now."
and some spurts of passion spent cheaply.
Forty bucks a pop,
and she will go home
to her one bedroom walkup, unfurnisned,
and crash on the stained mattress
found in a dumpster behind
a Goodwill store.
Sadly her next trick,
in a phsycopathic rage,
slits her throat
as he reaches climax,
and dumps her in an alley
just east of hopelessness.
She is found the next morning,
just the ruins of what was
the girl all the guys wanted
just a few years ago,
in the hometown she
long ago orphaned.

Excellent hub...enjoyed your thoughts/
your writing is so pure..straight to the point...you have a very true heart...a heart that every one in this world must have...
I have read 30 so far, (31) punish the buyers not the sellers.I have thought about this a long time.Great hub bro.
Simply divine work... I am truly impressed. You can't say you walk with The Creator and not care about your fellow man. At the end of the day, we are all HIS children whether you believe in HIM or not. That is what is truly awesome about HIM. HE loves even those who deny HIS existence. Truthfully, there is a litle "Lady by the side of the road" in all of us in this stageplay called Life. Great hub I'm a fan
That was truely a great deed.I myself have offered to help someone in similiar situations and sometimes I get in the middle of something I know nothing about.I feel so much better to have helped than look the other way.So many people don't want to get involved.I feel for their own safety when I go home to my world.I never quite forgot there facial expressions of sadness and pain. The government wastes so much money on other things. Why not spend it on people, real people who need a break in life.I blame politics and red tape.If a man had to lower himself to her position just to survive. I think many laws and people would be different.Good informative hub like always.
MY LORD U HAVE TO STOP WRITING! I HAVE BEEN SITTING AT THIS COMP. ALL MORNING, READING YOUR HUBS. U ARE SO GIFTED. YOUR THOUGHTS ARE LIKE MY THOUGHTS. WELL IV,E GOT TO GET BACK TO YOUR HUB ABOUT POLITICIANS.MY FAVORITE SO FAR, "DR. JECKLE AND HENRY HYDE HEE HEE
Good going Micky, I'll bet you left a good experience in her heart - one that will rise when the time and the Spirit coincide - again.
Wow. What a thought-provoking piece. I appreciate your concern and your anguish at not being sure how to help. If we all just WANTED to care all we could and strove to figure out the best way--the whole world would be in a better place. Thank God for you and your desire to love. We're all so far apart in so many ways, and good people hate other good people (see the hub about "Illegal Immigrants and the American Dream" we commented on) and Lord knows it takes WORK to try to love and help all--but it is always the right (only) thing to do with our lives, I believe! If you're ever around Arcadia, CA, please come to my church, Arcadia Congregational, United Church of Christ. Thanks again for your hub and I really look forward to reading more of your stuff.
I so like you, i really really do, you are a lovely person, let's meet up for coffee, i am not fit at all, i could not ride a bike up hill, but we could chat....... i like the way you think, i like the way you write........ How old is your daughter, i am so nosey...
This is a sad story, and all too true. Jesus, as described in the Biblical New Testament accounts, was a liberater of women, and of the poor. Good and thoughtful hub. (: v
Mickey, I understand where you are coming from. But on the other hand, I also believe that it is the oldest profession for a reason. I personally can't see why anyone would want to make pay for "love," but...
You are a kind roadside Knight of the road, your rewards await you my son. Just keep doing what your doing, helping people and peddling all the love you can muster. Great hub I hope she got out of that trick and treating. Rated UP
I enjoyed reading your story. You are truly a unique man among men.
Absolutely beautiful and not everyone does the right thing. The world could use more Micky Dees. Awesome hub.
so many have already said what I would, so just saying voted up!
I could write a hub on all the different stages of prostitution. You may be surprised as to the depth and history in all societies. There is the little girl on the street and the housewife in suburbia. The college student that will be a lawyer or doctor some day along with the street walkers. The street walkers are the poor prostitutes. ok, i was not gonna say much! you can shot me now..
there are the call girls you never see as call girls. They live regular lives in the higher end of town. many own their own homes by the time they retire. Some drop out long before that, but they still happy people not in the business anymore. I had a best friend, lost touch when they got transferred, who was in the business. Yea, one never knows, you only see the girls on the streets mostly. yea, I got stories could burn holes in steel! or pop corn next to a radiator on a hot desert day!~aloha~
Amen Micky she should not have to. So many people are prostitutes yet not in the literal sense. Many prostitute themselves at work and day to day go about giving of themselves something they too feel they should not. I especially appreciate this as I can tell you when it comes down to it, many a woman has said, if I have to I will... she should not have to! Peace :)
its a sensitive hub u wrote here, you are a honest and generous person, we have very few like you.
GOD bless and protect you alwz.!!
What can we do, Micky? I have the same question too. :(
Deeply moving heart piece. Vote up!
You have the love of Jesus!!! Wonderful Hub!
Any time I hear the word Prostitution, I think about what a broad meaning the word truthfully has and all the many diverse groups of people from both sexes who prostitute themselves is SO many ways. Prostitutuion is a broad and wide condition or affliction! Love and Peace :) Katie
You've done a service with the hub Micky. Both the prostitute and her customer harm themselves in the act. Lost people looking for some comfort from money and from sex. And you did the right thing by giving her money, you probably saved her from at least one humiliation and your kindness may even have given her some hope. Peace.
Hello Micky, that was really nice. Enjoyed very much.
So many comments that a return is needed ! Best, jandee
So true and beautiful, my brotherman! Your kindness and humanity shine through your words.
Love and peace
Tony

You are a wise man. That's more valuable than book-learnig, but I think you're pretty smart, too!
