Skippy And Squiggy

Howdy
My name is Skippy. Yep, just like the peanut butter. I really like the peanuts but you can hold on to that "butter". It sticks to the roof of my mouth.
There's not much going in a squirrel's life really. We just find some good trees to play in and hope there's some food nearby. This is a really nice spot in this "ornamental pear tree". It has nice bark for grabbing onto and climbing but it's got food too. The "people" don't like the pears as they're very tart. But I like them from spring onward. I snack on them when they're green and I munch on them when it's winter and they've been frozen a time or two.
This is a very nice tree for "playing". Some of the other squirrels come over occasionally and we play chase for hours. Of course it's more fun playing chase with the female squirrels. It's even more fun getting caught.
Pecan Tree
Yep, this is a Pecan Tree. Pecan is pronounced "pee con". granny used to say that a "pee can" was something you would urinate in.
People
People are a real curious species. Being so curious is one of the more
"curiouser" traits. There's one now checking me out. "HEY- TAKE A PICTURE
- IT'LL LAST LONGER!"
I could hang around here all day. Sometimes I do. Hanging by my rear feet is the most fun. You can check the "people" below without getting a "crick" in your neck.
Well I've gotta get busy and look busy. We squirrels are a busy bunch. We're not as busy as beavers, but we do have a pretty good reputation for rodents.
I love this tree. It feels so alive. I could just eat it sometimes.
Unfortunately this tree won't yield many pecans this year. Boy it did last year. This goober that lives in the house would leave them out all the time time for us. He leaves sunflower seeds out for us too. My folks always said that sunflower seeds were for the birds.
Oops- gotta run. Nope- I still don't trust that crusty old man. I don't care if he does leave food out. It's probably a trap. That's what granny always said anyway.
I'll just wait up here until he goes away and then I'll go down and "clean up".
I picked up an itch the other day. It was probably in gymnastics class.
I may look simple but I'm a complicated squirrel. I'm a thinking
squirrel's squirrel. I've gotta vision. I contemplate a lot of issues,
like "why are squirrels here". Is there a "God Squirrel"? I want to go where no other squirrel has gone before. I think a
squirrel should be judged by the content of character and not
by the size of his nuts or by the quantity.
A squirrel's life can be a bit lonely. You can hang around just so much. After a while a squirrel might look for more meaning in life.
There are a lot of loose squirrels out there. You've got to be careful with your heart. Some squirrels will take your heart and gnaw on it and toss it out of the tree. I thought I was in love once. She was such a pretty squirrel.
I thought I had a sweetheart, but then there was this squirrel, named Lenny, who would always be hanging around my squirrel. She would tell me that he was just a friend but one day she ran off to another tree with him.
I was forlorn for so long. I thought I never would heal. I started hanging around in some rough places. I would brood and sulk. I thought there wasn't a squirrel for me.
But, they say that every blind nut finds a squirrel every now and then. I looked up and there she was. She had a beautiful tail. You can't judge a squirrel by her tail. Pretty is as pretty does.
Granny used to tell us a story about how granpa died. He was a very fast squirrel. He used to run across the road all day long playing chicken with cars. It was a dangerous game. Many squirrels didn't make it. Granpa was so good that he was over confident. He was running and dodging across the busy road one day when a car ran over his tail. Granpa made it but when he saw that he lost the plume of fur that he had such pride in, he ran back into the road to retrieve it. It was there that we lost granpa and by a mere Volkswagen as well. The VW rolled right over his cranium. Granny would tell us this story and give us the moral as well. It's still some of the best advice today: "Never lose your head over a little piece of tail!"
I didn't want to fall in love again. There's so much pain. But things happen.
As I was eyeballing her one day, I saw, very close to her, this huge, hideous looking demon. It stood so tall. It wore spots of war-paint. It looked like something that could eat a squirrel for just an appetizer.
Without any regard to my own life, as quickly as I could, I ran straight forward, straight at the hideous monster. To my surprise I chased it away.
In the chaos and confusion, the apple of my eyeballing, ran away. I starting looking in some of the obvious squirrel hangouts and finally I saw her on the human's deck.
She said she was fine, just frightened by the monster. She thanked me for my act of heroism and then she invited me to have lunch with her. The old "dude" that lived inside left some treats out for us. She was so pretty.
We were shy at first. But, since that day we have been each others company as much as possible. This is how love should be. Each is free but enjoys the other.
Look at that tail! She makes my heart beat so fast!
I've felt healthier since meeting her. I've got an extra bounce in my step.
I feel younger. My climbing is better. My running is faster than ever.
I've gotten compliments on my tail as well!
Her name is Squiggy. I have found my soul-mate. It's going to be Skippy and Squiggy from now on.
I know that when I come home to the tree at night, Squiggy will be there.
I don't mind going out on a cold day and picking up some extra nuts for the one I love.
Sometimes She starts at the other end. We eat and eat our fill.
Then we meet in the middle for some quality time!
She's the Pecan of my eye!
Of course part of the he-squirrel's job is frightening away those monsters. When she sees me me "protecting her", it makes Squiggy jiggy!
So I've settled down with the one I love. We built this home right over the home of the old geezer that puts the nuts out for us. Life isn't too bad.
I'm afraid we're going to need a bigger home though. I can almost hear the pitter-patter of little paws.
Boy, I'm really glad the old dude is leaving some seeds out for us. It's hard enough going to the bathroom in this snow.
Squiggy Eats Sunflower Seeds In The Snow 12-18-09
But although some really bad days are ahead, there will be some better ones as well. Then we'll share the "spring" together as we have the autumn and winter.
Summer will follow Spring! A cycle will be complete. We'll share and grow together. We will be there for each other!

Is that your backyard? it is lovely, overlooking,
I enjoyed the story and the pics tyoo, how are you now?
maita
two little squirrels driving each other nuts, i think it is a good think these two listen to granny. They seem the typed of squirrels to get them selves in deep water, as they are so playful. loved it, you rodent
This is great, Micky Dee! Entertaining story... even with some powerful messages... and wonderful photography. The animals are so beautiful, and I love the video with Skippy eating while it's snowing all around him!
Thank you Micky Dee for a very nice squirrel hub, I enjoyed reading it. Thank you for sharing. creativeone59
they make a beautiful couple, came back and watched the videos this was brilliant....
Really enjoyed this hub about your friendly resident squirrels. Obviously you cater to them with nuts, etc. Sounded like you mixed in a bit of a story of your life...or someone's life as well? Fun hub. Liked the video with the snow falling.
Oh Mickey those little animal pics were so so cute.Oh that's it!!!!! I want a pet squirrel. Where can I buy one from?
Hahaha Mickey which nuts might they be?
Oh so they are running bout awesome. If you can just catch one and pop it in a postal bag(a humane one of course) that will be bonza.
I will start planting a few trees in my backyard in preparation.
Now you made me laugh out loud looking the photos and video of the squirrels, thanks. You are lucky to be able to see the deer from your house, I've only seen them in the distance when visiting a country park. Our native sqirrels in England were red sqirrels then someone brought grey squirrels here and the red squirrels numbers are on the decline. Thanks for sharing this.
just brought my grandson to this hub to read, we love it. He always spots the picture of you on your bike. He says he asked you if you were famous, and i have been searching for the answer, but can't find it. so are you famous????? brenda,,, i think he means for biking not writing ha ha
Hahaha, that was really good. That's one romantic squirrel. Love the names too "Skippy and Squiggy". Well, Skippy and Squiggy are the apple of my eye, lol.
Fyi, couple of blank spots (photos missing maybe) on your hub.
I can't tell you how much fun I had in this. Living here in NYC I'd say squirrels are our most common wildlife and well, I'm happy to have them. I have so many stories - like one coming and falling in love with my female cat. He (or she) stayed outside my window for ages and they just stared at each other, would nap, wake up, stare, repeat until night.
Ok so I loved the photo of the two lovers and I appreciate grannie explaining that it is 'pea-con' not 'pee-can' - it makes sense.
Lots of fun! Thank you!
Great hub!
I love the pictures too, well done!
Believe it or not I found a baby squirrel when I was about nine or so, it had fallen out of a tree, and was in need of help, so with the instructions from my science teacher, I raised it at home for two years, and then set it free in one of the parks. What hilarious creatures they are, he used to sit in front of a dresser mirror and chatter madly at his image. In fact he was so busy doing this that he wouldn't even eat unless I moved him. I always thought that they should make bird feeders out of mirrors, and then the squirrels who are quite vain would simply sit and chatter at themselves and leave the seed alone.~~Great story Mickey.~~MFB III
I used to visit the park months after I released him and he would come right up to me and greet me. Obviously they have good memories.
Yes Micky Dee...a pee can would be something that you pee in. lol How have I never noticed this hub before? Your yard looks like my yard...only your deck is nicer. lol Love this hub! I'm going to link it to my National Squirrel day hub!
The picture was telling a story while the writing was simply a summary to my mind, love the pics and the the fact that people are real curious species but bro Micky, out of curiosity, where on Earth did you get this beautiful pictures?
wonderful. the whole story and your lovely pics. You really are some wonderful man, Micky.
Don´t forget the words of wisdom..¨never lose your head over a little piece of tail¨¨......
I really enjoyed this read, beautiful pics and funny script...Thanks Micky Dee

Very nice pictures of squirrels, hard to photograph as they move quite fast. Our native red squirrels in the UK are gradually going extinct due to a disease American gray squirrels transmit. There a few places in Scotland where they are still holding out.
