Squirrel Nut Zipping!
I usually have all photos in the frequency that they were taken. For this hub I need to start at "lunch" after the ride. I've never told anyone that I "was a fan". I think the term often lowers the person saying this. And- who knows celebs? After all they are just people.
But - I was already endeared to the lady's entertainment prowess. I was now being served by her and graciously. "This" endeared her to me more!
Katharine Whalen of the Squirrel Nut Zippers is charming! And- what an entertainer!
Squirrel Nut Zippers "Put A Lid On It"
The Squirrel Nut Zippers were formed in 1993 in Chapel Hill and/or Carrboro, North Carolina. "Jimbo" Mathus (vocals and guitar) and his then wife Katharine Whalen (vocals, banjo, and ukulele) were the founders. Other early members were James Chris Phillips, Don Raleigh, and Ken Mosher.
"Jimbo" Mathus says, "Nut Zippers," is a southern term for a variety of old bootleg moonshine, and the band's name comes from a newspaper account which related the story of a highly intoxicated man who climbed a tree one night, refusing to come down even after authorities arrived. The article's headline read: "Squirrel Nut Zipper." It is also the name of a candy dating back to 1890.
The group can be described as a “retro-swing ensemble”.
The band is an eclectic fusion of Delta blues, gypsy jazz, 1930s-era swing. They are truly unique!
The band was founded by James "Jimbo" Mathus, formerly of Metalflake Mother and Johnny Vomit & The Dry Heaves, and his then-wife Katharine Whalen in Carrboro, North Carolina along with Chris Phillips, Don Raleigh and Ken Mosher. The group made its debut in Chapel Hill a few months later. Stacy Guess (formerly of Pressure Boys) joined shortly after.
We eat, therefore we ride!
Chris, Jose, and I meet at the Gulf Rim for great food. We are initially outside but the heat causes some spontaneous combustion in my beard and after putting the fire out we move inside where that, "hot air" box takes all the hot air and dumps it outside.
See Jose smiling through the window? He's smiling because he's not frying from the heat and because he's laughing at my inability to pass at taking another picture.
Chris had been a donor of some yogurt culture from another country, the old country, another planet or something. Ms. Whalen was an indirect recipient of this yogurt. Small world eh!
Burrito for Chris. Crab and Shrimp enchiladas for Jose and MD!
Cy stops by for some tea.
The Gulf Rim! Check it out! Tell em' Micky Sent you! They don't know me but say it anyway!
Katharine Whalen
Katharine Whalen- I'm a big fan! Okay- I'm only 5'6"- so I'm a fan!

And our masters of the "spoke "n" wheel" ride off into the horizon in search of another adventure. But- let's check out the "Gulf Rim" first!

Since the very beginning of the ride is for Cy and I to ride out to the start at Union Grove I thought it would be appropriate to put this very beginning here at the end!

Loved it, Micky Dee. Looks like quite an adventure, and I wish I could ride a bike. Can you believe I never learned? Shouldn't reveal such things. It'll hurt my image. (: v
Mic, great pix and muzac! bumped your buttons up as always. I'd have thought that watching bicycle rides would loose their shine, I thought wrong, you bring new fun to every one, 50
Awesome hub - I remember the Squirrel Nut Zippers - they did some real interesting stuff. Great choice for the hub.
I used to eat suqirrel nut zipper candy when I was a kid. Dad sold it in his store. Beautiful pics here!
Always looks like it's loads of fun and an awesome way to tour the countryside.
As for the heat...love outdoor patios and hate air conditioning. Go figure. :)
Definitely you lead a very active life! Love the pics!!
Micky, you always come up with something gorgeous and I found again in this hub. Thank you so much for showing me about this. This was absolutely great and beautiful. I rate this Up.

Too funny. If you have not yet read Nellieanna's story about the squirrels (speaking of them...) it is a must. Hilarious! and the photos are priceless.
Great ride. I mean great hub...well, both, :)
