The Soldier's Fate

The famous leaders will pontificate.

The powers that be will orchestrate.

There are those who will only delegate.

Orders are given by the Heads of State.

Bloodshed is what they ultimately dictate.

There’s nothing they won’t desecrate.

Filthy lucre is certainly on the slate.

The average soldier is too young to hate.

The soldier’s value, they will elevate.

The soldier will fight and accommodate.

Medals and ribbons will accumulate.

The present war will dissipate.

The war is over, he can celebrate.

And so his value will depreciate.

The out-thrust chest they now deflate.

His country refuses to compensate.

High society will now insulate.

They will also insist to separate.

It is not the soldier’s wish to irritate.

The soldier is someone to isolate.

The soldier will unintentionally alienate.

The soldier and his property will separate.

The cold wind seems to never abate.

The soldier comes to his only estate.

Is it a cardboard box or refrigerator crate?

May he warm himself over a sewer grate?

Perhaps the prisons will need an inmate.

His country will under-appreciate,

Until he reaches that Golden Gate.

Mick, I can say many things about this Hub. You know what they'll be. My question, though, is simple. May I link our website for Holy Truth Veterans Housing Program to this Hub?

Unchained Grace, you must know that you can have what you wish of mine. I don't fit a mold and you see that. There are very few who can see my more inner-most core. We have been and are committed to be men of action, compassion, and duty. I think we know about each others hearts. Please have what you will and use it as you see fit.

You've not read "Vietnam 1968-1969 Or Was It Yesterday?" or "Dear God It's Micky". Yes, I was a Marine at the DMZ in Vietnam, 1968-1969. Or was it yesterday?

What were you in Ghost Whisper? And thank you for serving!

In England Wootten Bassett - is one of the places where the planes land to return the young soldiers who have lost their lives while on duty. Some of the men returning there left as boys as young as eighteen.

It has become a tradition for the local people to line the streets as a mark of respect and often the families are also waiting there for the return of their loved ones. As a mother it makes me feel sad to see the women who have lost their sons and children who have lost their father.

Until recently if you had done an internet search for this place it would have come up with details and photos of what I have written here. Unfortunately a court case now dominates the news about the place and is high in the search results for Wootton Bassett. What can I say - it is good that you can write this and share it with us even if reading it reminds us of this sadness.

I love veterans and soldiers, only God knows how much they have endured, they should deserve the best, in terms of financial and emotional support,

I am always touched when I see the portion in CNN every am where Robin Meade read a letter from the family and friends that they miss their family member who is serving,

hats off Micky Dee, TC, Maita

God Bless the Soldier...Our "Young Ones" go to put it all on the line...at the bidding of our leaders...and a country waits to see if they will stand behind their actions...meanwhile...the "Young ones" still go out to do the biddings of our leaders (as you did once...for us!) Simply stated...this poem on a "Soldier's Fate" was great, Mickey Dee. The military old war posters and slogans helped bring the history behind all the times that our military...ie: full of "young ones"...have gone out to serve us! Semper Fi, my friend. This Poem was "Well Done, Marine...Outstanding."

Thank you Manlypoetryman. your words and response, as well as other responses to this simple message have floored me in a good way. The bravery of our youth reflects the pride and love in our homes. I hope these young pups will be loved when they're old dogs. Thanks

Echoes Of War, Centuries Of Grief.

To all those tiny waifs, faces upturned

their eyes so new to absence, moist with tears

girls holding tight with trembling lips

young lads who clung with earnest grips

upon their Daddies legs refusing to let go

then wailing with dismay at his goodbyes.

Through out the centuries war has been a blight

their crying caught in check when his voice spoke

to promise them that he would be back soon

he turned and walked away to fight a war

then vanished in the smoke and flames unleashed.

I speak for precious children left behind

his promise lives, someday you'll be rejoined

beyond the dust of graves...and Dads denied.

To all the Moms, and Dads who gave much more

then any cause should ask of them to give

this boy they nurtured, smiling as he grew

then frowning as the war drums banged their toll.

Their dreams for sons did not include a trip

to battle zones, to risk both life, and limb

but patriots they touched his uniform

they kissed his cheek, and hugged him one more time

then sent him whole, and healthy off to fight.

But got back telegrams...and body bags

some shiny medals, and some folded flags

plus monstrous gaping holes left in their souls

wherein echoed the words of his farewell....

"Don't worry Mom and Dad, I'll see you soon."

and in a sense his words they still ring true

for when his parent's hearts they cease to ache

they'll find him standing tall at heavens gate

awaiting their return, so patiently

he'll welcome them at last, forever home.

To all those wives who watched their vows dissolve

much earlier then they could ever fathom

by shrapnel, bullets, bayonets, and swords

"Death did them part..." upon some foreign shore

each marriage formed ironic parallels.

Your husbands "marched down aisles"...then off to war

know that your husbands left for "Honor" too

they "Cherished" their homeland, both "rich and poor"

in "Sickness, and in health" sworn to defend

"For better, or for worse" they stood their ground.

"United as one" each platoon advanced

on bended knees they fell for sacred vows.

And know that in their final, ragged breath

they whispered your names with great reverence

your last kiss lingered sweetly on their lips

your memories cradled them to paradise

where someday God again will join your hands

renewing love that "NONE" will put asunder

and "Thank You" for your greatest sacrifice.

To all young men who gave up hopes for love,

young saplings caught by thunder from above,

those tall and strong who faced wars cruelest winds,

when I.E.D.s and bombs removed their limbs.

Sent home to sit as veterans alone,

just trunks with souls, in wards where love's postponed,

or burned in fiery blasts that scorched their skin,

beyond all hopes of passion, wallowing in,

wheelchairs to watch the pretty nurses tend,

the kind of wounds society can't mend.

They gave up wives, or lovers and remain,

an object women pity, but refrain,

from ever viewing as someone to love,

destroying all the joys that men dream of.

I've walked the rows of beds where these men lay,

And seen despair across each face convey,

the wish that they could all be whole like me,

They faced the fall, as wartime stole their leaves,

to come back home, and find love that relieves,

the pains of being maimed, for them I grieve.

More than even those who died, this I believe,

for I have arms to hold, and legs to dance,

and all my parts to share in sweet romance,

but they have single beds where they will be,

sad victims most folks never want to see.

To all brave men who fought ...these words salute

Brothers-in-arms who stood answering the call

who lost their friends to crippling, sudden blasts

or choked on nerve, or blood, or mustard gas

as well as victims crushed by Agent Orange.

The years "still" stake their claim, the death tolls rise

to those who lost their limbs, and normal lives

or fell to drugs, disease, or suicides.

To all who faced the British musket balls

and those who fought for union in our land

all those who sat entrenched against the Huns

or belly crawled through sands at Normandy

or scaled the lava crusts of Iwo Jima

or shivered in the Chosin Reservoir

or night patrolled jungles in Vietnam

or faced the toxic winds of Desert storm

or fell in flames on mountains of Afghan

or took the bullet's puncture in Iraq.

Each year we send out more who don't come back

this poem's for you, your brothers yearky gather,

to guarantee you'll never be forgotten

and when at last they "Fall out" from this life

they'll join your ranks, "At Ease" on heaven's shores

in glory, honored, peace at long last granted

free from the pains of war forevermore.

To all prisoners of war...and M.I.A.'s

I offer you these humble words, and song

our hopes for your return...they slip away

for you've remained in limbo far too long

unknown the place you fell, but still we care

you haunt our thoughts, this is our solemn prayer

"As long as there are men who have a voice

recovery teams will search, it is our choice

as veterans we always must demand

a true accounting brought for every man.

Return the fallen, here to their homeland

for them anything less......it would be wrong

I close now with my old familiar song...

the lyrics that I wrote to sing with..(Taps)

"Rest in Peace....

Brave young men

free from sorrow,

and pain....battle spent

from your humble graves, so alone

We shall come...

and we'll carry you....Home."

I recently read about the British soldier who picked up a grenade thrown @them and threw it out, dis saved not just him but his comrades as well, while reading this hub,i saw an image of me on camouflage with packs of water bottle and radio message equipments, the sensation of cold all over me as i am typing left me with nothing but a wish. How i wish i was a soldier?veterans are the true HEROES. Micky Dee, "Old soldier never die" Nice hub.

Our nation should bow its head in collective shame for the treatment of the only true heros. My 2nd husband was a Nam vet and was never the same man who left to serve his country. Despite the break in mind, body and spirit his humor and great heart were still intact.

I work for a construction company that completed a "Home of A Hero" project in 2008. We built a home complete from the ground up on donations from our vendors for an Purple Heart Iraq vet and his family. They went on the Montel Williams show and were given a special van for the soldier and a host of other gifts for the family.

Unfortunately, I recently heard that the husband and wife and separated, and the soldier may lose his benefits for beating his spouse.

My ex used to say that soldiers were thrown away, by the citizens and the government for a war they did not ask to participate in and lost.

Our heros are in need of serious help both mentally and financially, but our nations priorities are screwed up we rather give millions to guys to bounce, hit or kick a ball and allow our best citizens to lay in the street with no home or food. Its dispicable. Sorry for the rant, but I felt your pain my friend.

Micky Dee profile image

Micky Dee Hub Author 2 years ago

Amen Sister. No rant there. That was too short. You have so much to say. If all Americans would unite and vice the same we could turn a corner. There are no heroes that kick balls, throw balls, shoot balls, bounce balls, etc. There are no idols who act on a stage. There are no idols who merely sing and play. There are no idols that are merely powerful and do nothing but stroke each other. Thank you PMCCRAY!

My favorite line, showing the pride, the cause he thought he/she was to fight for, and the faith he gave unjustified. A solid hub, and a wonderful close to restore hope!
